Job summary

Total Wine & More in Bethesda, MD is seeking an Assistant Project Manager, Construction to support planning, coordination, and delivery of commercial construction projects from preconstruction to closeout. You will work with PMs, vendors, and internal teams to keep projects on schedule and within budget.

The role emphasizes organization, financial awareness, and growth into a full PM role under the Director of Construction.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or related field preferred or equivalent experience.
  • 3–6 years of experience in commercial construction, assistant project management, project engineering, construction administration, project controls, or related field.
  • Experience supporting or coordinating multiple commercial construction projects is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the construction lifecycle from preconstruction through project closeout.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite; intermediate level.
  • Microsoft Project or comparable scheduling tools; familiarity preferred.
  • Autodesk Construction Cloud or other document management systems; familiarity preferred.
  • Travel up to 5% as needed for meetings, site visits, or project support.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Managers with coordination for assigned construction projects, including startup activities and milestone tracking.
  • Track schedules, documentation, purchase orders, contracts, insurance certificates, landlord approvals, and turnover needs with Project Managers and teams.
  • Maintain current project records: RFIs, submittals, transmittals, drawings, change orders, closeout docs, warranties, as-built drawings, operation manuals, owner turnover packages.
  • Prepare and issue purchase orders following internal approvals.
  • Support small facilities projects or work orders when coordination is needed.
  • Keep organized project files and provide timely updates to Project Managers and stakeholders.
  • Participate in project meetings and capture follow-ups, decisions, and open items.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of coordination tools, workflows, and reporting.

Working closely with Construction Project Managers, consultants, vendors, and internal departments, the Assistant Project Manager helps coordinate project activities, administer contracts, manage project documentation, monitor financial performance, and facilitate communication among all project stakeholders. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, financially minded, and eager to develop into a full Project Manager through hands-on experience managing all phases of commercial construction. You will
  • Assist Project Managers with coordination for assigned construction projects, including startup activities, milestone tracking, stakeholder communications, and cross-functional follow-up to keep projects progressing on schedule.
  • Track project schedules, documentation requirements, purchase orders, contracts, insurance certificates, landlord approvals, and turnover needs in partnership with Project Managers and internal teams.
  • Oversee accurate and current project records, including RFIs, submittals, transmittals, shop drawings, change orders, closeout documentation, warranties, as-built drawings, operation manuals, and owner turnover packages.
  • Prepare and issue purchase orders in accordance with internal approval processes.
  • Support small Facilities projects or work orders when construction coordination is needed.
  • Maintain organized project files and provide timely updates to Project Managers and internal stakeholders.
  • Participate in project meetings and capture follow-ups, decisions, and open items.
  • Support continuous improvement of project coordination tools, workflows, and reporting practices.
You will come with
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Engineering, Business, or a related technical discipline preferred.
  • Equivalent construction industry experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • 3-6 years of experience in commercial construction, assistant project management, project engineering, construction administration, project controls, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting or coordinating multiple commercial construction projects strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the construction lifecycle from preconstruction through project closeout.
  • Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite; intermediate.
  • Microsoft Project or comparable scheduling tools.
  • Autodesk Construction Cloud or comparable construction document management systems.
  • Power BI or dashboard/reporting tools preferred.
  • Travel: Ability to travel up to 5% as needed for meetings, site visits, or project support.
