Job summary

The Summit Bechtel Reserve invites dedicated staff to support Justice National Scout Camp programs in a dynamic summer setting. You will lead and assist in merit badge sessions, coach teams, and ensure engaging, safe experiences for Scouts across ages 10–17 while living on site in Staff Camp housing.

Candidate should be 18+, comfortable presenting to groups, and ready to join a mission-driven team. Housing and a monthly salary of $2,000–$2,100 are provided during the season.

Qualifications

• Experience presenting to youth and adults.
• Scouting experience and staff leadership preferred.
• Must complete background screening.

Responsibilities

• Lead setup, operation, and takedown of program areas.
• Train and manage area director team for safe, engaging programs.
• Support merit badge sessions and program areas.
• Coach staff to build an effective team.
• Input progress in the online advancement system.
• Participate in camp-wide programs.
• Model Scout Oath and Law daily.
• Maintain safe, clean work area.
• Abide by staff handbook policies.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Provide high-quality advancement and enrichment experiences for Justice National Scout Camp guests in a summer camp setting by facilitating and contributing to fun, safe, and engaging programs.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide leadership to the setup, operation, and takedown of Justice National Scout Camp program areas
• Assist in training and management of the area director team to deliver safe, relevant, and engaging programs
• Support merit badge sessions and program areas, especially during program operations
• Coach and counsel staff members to build and maintain an effective team
• Assist with merit badge and program progress input in the online advancement application
• Provide leadership to and participate in camp-wide programs and activities
• Model the Scout Oath and Law in daily interactions
• Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe work area
• Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership
• Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the SBR staff handbook

Qualifications

• Minimum age: 18+
• Comfortable speaking and presenting in front of youth and adults
• Previous Scouting/Summit experience strongly preferred, with experience coaching and leading teams is a plus
• National Camping School Resident Program Director certification considered a plus Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (includes background screening)
• Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication

Physical & Practical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, and hike, up to 8 hours daily and ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds
• Complete the Annual Health and Medical Record, including height/weight guidelines
• Housing: 10'x12' platform tent in Staff Camp | Uniform: Summit Staff Uniform | Work Hours: 50+

About the Summit Bechtel Reserve and the Justice National Scout Camp

The Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR) is a 10,600-acre outdoor adventure and education facility located near New River Gorge National Park in southern West Virginia. As one of Scouting America's National High Adventure Bases, the Summit provides transformative experiences for Scouts and other youth.

At Justice National Scout Camp, Scouts (ages 10-17) participate in more than 80 merit badge programs in areas such as aquatics, climbing, S.T.E.M., arts and media, citizenship, and outdoor skills. They also enjoy high-adventure activities like mountain biking, rafting, and skateboarding, as well as classic camp traditions like flag ceremonies and campfires. Salary: $2000 - $2100 per month
