This position supervises daily pool activities and is responsible for proactively communicating and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The purpose of this position is to provide a positive role model for members as well as fellow aquatic staff and to create a character-developing atmosphere. In addition to lifeguard and swim lesson duties, this position assists the aquatic director with scheduling, hiring, training, and supervising all staff.
Essential Responsibilities
- Implement strategic direction/vision for operations of the aquatic department
- Assist in recruiting, hiring, and training staff, including Lifeguards and First Aid/CPRinstructors
- Assist with the monthly scheduling of lifeguards and creatively work to fill gaps in coverage
- Work lifeguard shifts when coverage cannot be achieved
- Ensures excellent customer/member service and meet Association standards
- Develops relationships in the community that have a positive impact on programming and fundraising
- Ensure safety across all aquatic and program endeavors; lead collaboratively to provide systems that achievesanitary conditions, safe environments, program excellence, and member service excellence
- Assist in facilitation and planningLifeguard staff meetings
- Maintains the certifications of aquatic staff
Scope of Responsibilities
- Assist with part-time aquatic staff of approximately 20-40 lifeguards
- Assist in maintenance of pools and all equipment
- Assist with swim lessons – parent/child, preschool, school-age, private
- Head Lifeguard

Qualifications / Position Requirements
- Experience in aquatics and/or recreation preferred
- Experience working with children and adults
- Experience supervising and training
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to communicate through multiple generations and formats
- YMCA Lifeguard certification preferred, will be trained
- YMCA Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred, will be trained and will teach
Physical Demands
- Ability to pass lifeguard certification course
- Lifeguard training swim requirements are: 100 yard front crawl followed by a 2 minute water tread, 50 yard swim each of front crawl with head up, sidestroke, breaststroke, breaststroke with head up, invertedbreaststroke kick with hands on chest, surface dive and swim underwater for 15 feet, sprint swim of 60 feet(in 20 seconds) with a surface dive to bottom of 6 feet to retrieve an object, hold object out of water for 1minute tread, climb out of the pool and perform 100 chest compressions.

- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loudsituations
- Work in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorine.
- Exposure to indoor or outdoor elements
- Ability to lift 25 pounds
