Job summary

As a key member of the Aquatics team, a Swim instructor teaches both youth and adults swimming techniques & pool safety, and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The main purpose of this position is to provide a positive role model for members and to create a character‑developing atmosphere.

Responsibilities
  • Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
  • Remain alert.
  • Have adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Teach with patience and a caring attitude.
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  • Remain in water for long periods of time.
  • Be responsible for scheduled classes/shifts & follow appropriate substitutes procedures.
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to class start time to set up and greet participants.
  • Clean up all equipment and pool deck after classes have ended.
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Aquatics’ Director.
Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 15.
  • Team player with personal commitment to the YMCA Mission, Philosophy, & Character Development Values.
  • People‑centered, service‑oriented.
  • YMCA Youth Swim Lesson Instructor preferred, but we will train.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous lifeguard experience preferred, but we will train.
  • Must be able to swim and demonstrate strokes.
  • Obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications within 90 days of employment.
Physical Demands
  • Remain alert.
  • Work in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorine.
  • Remain in the pool for extended periods of time.
  • Have adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  • Environment may include indoor and/or outdoor pool conditions.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds.
  • High noise level.
