Job description

Assistant Professor of Translation Studies

The Department of Romance, German, Russian Languages and Literatures at California State University, Long Beach invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Translation Studies.

Duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate translation courses, integrating interpreting studies into the curriculum, designing technology-informed curricula, mentoring students and supervising theses, maintaining an active research agenda, engaging professionally as a translator and interpreter, facilitating internships and industry partnerships, and participating in departmental and university service.

Start date: August 17, 2027 (Fall 2027 semester).

Ph.D. in Translation Studies, Applied Linguistics, Comparative Literature or a related field, with the degree completed by August 1, 2027. Demonstrated proficiency in English and at least two of the following Romance languages: French, Italian and Spanish, with the ability to teach translation between English and Spanish.

Formal training and professional translation experience; background in interpreting; university-level translation teaching experience; expertise in computer-assisted translation tools and machine translation workflows; an active research agenda with scholarly publications; and demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.

Preferred: experience training professional translators; graduate research supervision; involvement in program development; curriculum adaptation to emerging technologies; a record of international collaboration; experience with student populations demographically similar to those at CSULB; and culturally relevant mentoring strategies.
