Augustana College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Math and Computer Sciences in Rock Island, Illinois, beginning August 2027. The successful candidate will teach statistics and other math or data science courses, advise undergraduates, and pursue scholarly work with student involvement.

The department currently includes five mathematicians and five computer scientists; hire emphasizes teaching excellence, research activity, and campus

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in statistics or mathematics (or ABD) is required.
• Demonstrated potential for high quality teaching in mathematics and statistics.
• Ability to mentor undergraduate research and guide student projects.

Responsibilities

• Teach 24 credits per 10-month academic year (courses typically 4 credits).
• Teach statistics courses at both lower and upper levels and related mathematics/data science offerings.
• Develop and sustain an undergraduate research agenda with student participation.
• Advise undergraduate students majoring in statistics and/or data science.
• Contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration across the Mathematics and Computer Science department.

Job Description

The Department of Math and Computer Sciences at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning in August of the 2027-2028 academic year.

The successful candidate will teach 24 credits per 10-month academic year (standard courses are 4 credits). Candidates should demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching statistics in both upper and lower-level statistics courses, as well as other mathematics or data science courses. Candidates should be interested in continuing a scholarly research agenda, and offer opportunities for undergraduate students to contribute to research projects. Candidates should be interested in advising undergraduate students majoring in statistics and/or data science

The candidate will join five mathematicians and five computer scientists in an active joint Mathematics and Computer Science department.

What We're Looking For

The minimum requirement for this position is to hold a Ph.D. degree in statistics or mathematics (or be ABD). Successful candidates will demonstrate:

• Ability to teach lower-level and advanced statistics courses, such as Stats for Health Professionals, calculus-based Probability and Statistics, and Statistical Learning (for data scientists), especially in small classroom settings where hands‑on active learning is prioritized.
• An interest in becoming an excellent teacher and/or the demonstrated potential for high quality teaching, especially in mathematics and statistics courses.
• Potential for successful research in a liberal arts environment, involving undergraduate students.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to recruit, work with, and motivate students both in and out of the classroom.
• The potential for interdisciplinary collaboration and the ability to contribute statistical expertise to programs and projects across the College.
• A commitment to active engagement in campus service and the scholarly vitality of the department and campus community.

Additional Information

The budgeted compensation for this position ranges from $60,000 to $63,000 per year based upon minimum and preferred qualifications, education, experience, skills, and abilities. Actual placement within the range will depend upon experience, education, research, and other relevant factors.
