  • In their first year, a reduced teaching assignment of five courses plus one fully-compensated course release.
  • Contribute to general education.

Department Information: The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics offers majors in Mathematics, Mathematics Teaching, Computer Science, and Statistics and graduates an average of 35 students per year. Among the 9 faculty, the department is home to three statisticians with varied research interests. In addition to the statistics major, the statistics minor is popular with students across campus, including those majoring in Economics, Finance, Management, Biology, Psychology and others. It is the philosophy of the Department that the skills of analytical thinking and logical argument, combined with the ability to communicate effectively, form the core of a solid liberal arts education in the mathematical sciences. Duties and Responsibilities

Gustavus faculty teach, advise, conduct research, and serve the college and department. Responsibilities include:

Teach a 6-course equivalent each academic year. In their first year, the successful candidate will receive a reduced teaching assignment of five courses, plus one fully-compensated course release. Courses may be different sections of the same course within a semester. Primary teaching responsibilities will include teaching a wide range of statistics courses, and contributions to general education.

Elevate your teaching by joining a teaching circle, participating in workshops, applying for an internal teaching development grant, and engaging in conversations about teaching with colleagues across campus.

Advance your scholarship by working with undergraduate research assistants, joining a writing retreat, applying for an internal grant, receiving travel funds to present at conferences, receiving help applying for external grants, and making use of our research facilities.

Develop professional skills by participating in faculty meetings and committees, attending faculty development days, and taking advantage of the College’s membership to the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD).

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications: PhD in statistics, biostatistics, or closely related field; at least one year of both theoretical and applied statistics coursework at the master’s level or higher; proficiency in R/RStudio, SAS, or Python, previous teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications: demonstrated effectiveness in teaching; evidence of a commitment to undergraduate student advising; demonstrated commitment to supporting students from varied backgrounds and identities; evidence of preparation for primary teaching responsibilities; ability to conduct research or scholarly collaborations with undergraduates, interest in, and preparation for, leadership roles in the college and profession

Salary Range $66,000-$72,000
