Summary

The Department of Counseling at East Texas A&M University, a student‑ready, Doctoral University classified as R2: High Research Activity by the Carnegie Classification—invites applications for a 9‑month, full‑time, non‑tenure track Assistant Professor of Practice (Professional Track Faculty) starting Fall 2027. The successful candidate will serve as the Practicum & Internship Coordinator for the CACREP‑accredited programs, with a commensurate instructional workload in recognition of this responsibility. The chosen candidate will contribute to the department's teaching and service missions. Specifically, we seek a colleague with a demonstrated record of effective teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels; a commitment to meaningful service to the department, college, university, and profession; and an expertise in play therapy or clinical supervision as evidenced by the applicant’s teaching and service contributions. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate professional identity in counseling/counselor education through the following activities: (a) sustained memberships in professional counseling organizations (e.g., ACA, ACES, APT, CSI, TAAP, TCA, etc.); (b) relevant professional counseling credentials (e.g., licensed professional counselor, licensed professional counselor‑supervisor, licensed chemical dependency counselor, Registered Play Therapist™, Registered Play Therapist‑Supervisor™); and (c) sustained professional engagement in professional development and renewal activities, professional service and advocacy in counseling, ongoing counseling practice, and research and scholarly activity in counseling.

Duties & Responsibilities

Teaching

• Teach up to three courses each fall and spring semester across undergraduate and graduate programs
• Contribute to the department's core curriculum and develop graduate and undergraduate courses in areas of expertise.
• Deliver instruction online (asynchronously and synchronously) and face‑to‑face at any university campus (Commerce, Dallas, Plano).
• Pursue certifications, trainings, and workshops that demonstrate commitment to effective and innovative pedagogy.
• Stay current on trends and best practices in counseling and one's area(s) of expertise.
• Advise undergraduate and graduate students.
• Respond to student inquiries within established university, college, and department expectations, and provide timely, meaningful feedback on assignments, assessments, and evaluations.
• Foster a supportive learning environment that promotes student persistence, competency attainment, and timely completion of coursework.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Service & Institutional Engagement

• Participate collegially in departmental, college, and university committees; institutional effectiveness initiatives; accreditation activities; strategic priorities; and other service responsibilities as assigned.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff to implement departmental initiatives and programs.
• Participate in required faculty meetings, commencement ceremonies, professional development activities, college events, planning sessions, and other institutional engagement opportunities.
• Contribute to the professional counseling community through activities such as reviewing, presenting at conferences, and serving in professional organizations.
• Engage in outreach or community service consistent with the mission of the university.
• Complete all required university training and assigned administrative responsibilities in a timely manner.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• Earned doctoral degree in counseling/counselor education;
• have a related doctoral degree and have been employed as a full‑time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July1,2013;
• have been employed as a full‑time doctoral‑level faculty member in a CORE‑accredited master’s program before July1,2017; or have graduated from a rehabilitation doctoral program before January1,2018.
• Academic background (e.g., teaching, research, service) commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice.
• Evidence of scholarly productivity or potential for scholarly productivity in research/creative activity commensurate with rank.
• Evidence of effective teaching or teaching potential at the university level, including online and in‑person graduate‑level instruction.
• Active and sustained memberships in professional counseling organizations.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to travel to any university instruction site (e.g., Commerce, Dallas, Plano).
• Relevant professional counseling credentials (e.g., licensed professional counselor, licensed professional counselor‑supervisor, licensed chemical dependency counselor, certified school counselor, registered play therapist supervisor, registered play therapist, etc.) or licensure/certification eligibility with a commitment to obtain within the first year of their academic appointment.

Preferred Education / Skills / Experience

• Earned doctoral degree in counseling/counselor education from a CACREP‑accredited program.
• Relevant teaching experience at the graduate level in a CACREP‑accredited program, commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice.
• Evidence of training and/or experience teaching counseling coursework online, both synchronously and asynchronously.
• Knowledge of and familiarity with CACREP standards and the accreditation process.
• Dissertation committee member experience.
• Credentialed as a Licensed Professional Counselor‑Supervisor (LPC‑S).
• Expertise in play therapy or clinical supervision, with credentialing appropriate to the area of expertise: Play therapy: Member of the Association for Play Therapy and credentialed as a Registered Play Therapist‑Supervisor™; or Clinical supervision: Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential administered by the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE).
