Job description

Location: Wayland Baptist University – San Antonio, Texas


Supervised By: Dean of School of Nursing


Position Classification: Exempt

General Responsibilities

Wayland Baptist University is an intentionally Christian community of higher education that expects its employees to advance the mission, vision, and identity of the University as defined by policy and through the strategic plan. Faculty should maintain an authentic Christian faith that is evident through personal interactions and activities, commitment to a local church body, and serve as a model for students. As a full‑time faculty member, the Assistant Professor of Nursing will be primarily responsible for teaching and for seeking out mentoring relationships with students through academic advising, undergraduate research, and student organization support.


Specific Tasks and Duties


  • Prepare and teach 33 semester hours each academic year as part of a 12‑month contract.

  • Understand and abide by FERPA regulations.

  • Maintain required paperwork: grades, attendance, report submissions, and Blackboard updates (grades weekly, attendance daily).

  • Post syllabus on Blackboard by the start of term.

  • Provide student status reports mid‑term and final grades to Student Services, including concurrent student spreadsheet for the Registrar’s Office, as requested by the Department of Student Success or Athletics.

  • Adhere to accommodations from Title IX Coordinator and/or Disability Services Coordinator.

  • Maintain a minimum of 10 hours of office hours per week and be available on campus five days a week.

  • Dress professionally and appropriately for assigned tasks.

  • Academically advise undergraduate and, if applicable, graduate students and assist with registration and recruiting events.

  • Assist the dean and faculty members in developing new courses/programs, reporting data, selecting textbooks, and developing syllabi.

  • Serve on university, faculty, and school committees; attend graduations, school events, scheduled faculty/staff meetings and professional development activities.

  • Maintain competence in the use of Wayland’s adopted online teaching and retention management systems:

    • Slate

    • Student Services



  • Provide service to the university through committees, councils, and special projects.

  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Dean of the School of Nursing.

  • All work must be performed in alignment with the terms of the signed contract.


Additional Requirements


  • Endorsement by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

  • Able to pass background checks.


Minimum Qualifications


Education: Must hold a master’s degree in nursing; a doctorate is preferred. Prior professional or work experience is required.


Experience and Knowledge: Basic knowledge of nursing education and clinical experience in the assigned content area. Must hold an unencumbered RN license in Texas or equivalent compact state licensure. Commitment to maintain professional competence through continuing education, conferences, workshops, seminars, academic courses, research projects, and professional writing.

Work Environment

The primary work setting is a standard office. Employees work at a desk with computers, phones, and printers in a controlled temperature. Noise is moderate. The role may require teaching in a university classroom with lectures, discussions, and technology use. Classroom conditions vary, but often include projectors, whiteboards, and computers.


Hours of Work

Full‑time, the official work week is 40 hours, Monday through Friday. Hours may be scheduled to accommodate teaching and other responsibilities.


Physical Demands


  • Frequently stand, walk, sit, and flex upper trunk.

  • Frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally pull or push objects.

  • Frequently carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally reach above shoulder height.


Conditions of Employment

Employment is subject to an introductory period. New hires must provide documentation within three days to establish identity and employment eligibility as required by ICE. Must operate a licensed vehicle, have a valid state driver's license, and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
