Assistant Professor of Classics

The Department of Classics at Stanford University seeks applicants for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Greek Language and Literature, with specialization either in Greek prose of the Classical era, or Greek literature of the Hellenistic or Imperial periods. Ability to teach courses in one or more of the following areas is a desired additional skill: epigraphy, papyrology, paleography, textual criticism, comparative-historical linguistics, ancient religion. The candidate will be expected to teach and advise students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and must hold a PhD in Classics by the start of the term of appointment (September 1, 2027).

Applicants should also have a consistent record of quality teaching, and demonstrate the pedagogical skills required to design and teach a variety of courses, in the original languages and in translation, at all levels, as well as to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. The annual teaching load is four courses over three quarters.

The salary range for this position is $115,133 - $135,388, for academic year 2026-27.

Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.
