The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Japanese Language Pedagogy to begin Fall 2027.

The department offers BA, MA, PhD programs across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean studies and is committed to integrating Native Hawaiian language, culture, and values into its academic environment.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Japanese Language, Japanese Linguistics, or closely related field; ABD considered, all requirements by Aug 2027.
  • College-level teaching experience.
  • Expertise in Japanese pedagogy.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity in the field of specialization.
  • High proficiency in Japanese and English.
  • Ability to work collegially with students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate content courses and Japanese language courses (introductory to advanced).
  • Teach graduate courses in area of specialization.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Serve on thesis/dissertation committees.
  • Maintain an active agenda of scholarly research and publication in area(s) of specialization.
  • Contribute service at the department, college, university, and community levels.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair.
