The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is #18 in the QS World University Rankings 2027. The MA in Intercultural Studies Programme and MA in Cultural Management Programme (in the Division of Cultural Studies, Department of Cultural & Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts) invite applications for an Assistant Professor in Non-Western Environmental Media.
Applicants should have a PhD in Film and Media Studies, Literary and Cultural Studies, Arts and Humanities, or related fields. Preferred areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, environmental humanities and aesthetics, ecocinema and ecomedia, critical ecologies and planetary futures, blue and ocean humanities, and media infrastructure, archeology, and geology, with an inter-Asian or South-South focus.
The candidate should be familiar with the cultural landscapes and environmental issues of Asia and/or the Global South. It would be beneficial for the candidate to have some methodological background and practical experience in film and creative media production, community arts practice, archival work, digital storytelling, spatial mapping, sound studies, speculative design, and/or digital humanities. It would also be an advantage if the candidate could help cultivate networks with other underrepresented contexts. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest and expertise in contemporary cultural practices and academic debates in their relevant fields. An ideal candidate should bring innovative research that aligns with the Department’s established strengths in critical approaches and contributes to the university’s strategic focus areas while enhancing their intellectual, cultural, and scholarly diversity.
The candidate is expected to offer courses for the two MA programmes but may be asked to teach at the BA and PhD levels.
Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to 3 years initially commencing August 2027, which, subject to budget, performance, and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation (tenure).
