Job description

The University of Virginia, School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) seeks applications for an Assistant Professor and Faculty Director for the Virginia Prison Education Program (VPEP). This is an in-person, fulltime (1 FTE) twelve-month Academic General Faculty (Tenure-Ineligible) position on the Teaching or Practice Track.

The VPEP Faculty Director advances the SCPS mission of providing high-quality, accessible education designed for adult learners. The position supports the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree completion program launching as a pilot at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women and then expanding. This position oversees the planning, execution and evaluation of the program and plays a vital role in helping SCPS create a lasting impact with this new opportunity.

The VPEP Faculty Director reports to David Corlett, Senior Director of Undergraduate Degree Programs, who oversees the BIS team. The VPEP Faculty Director is charged with developing new processes and procedures, record keeping systems, collaboration between multiple stakeholders, and more.

JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:

Academic Responsibilities:
§ In conjunction with faculty peers, responsible for course curriculum development and delivery for incarcerated students on site.
§ Provides highly effective instruction, class management, and a vibrant, challenging and engaging academic experience for students.
o A fulltime teaching load is ten (10) 3-credit hour courses per year (Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.) This position is expected to receive release for course equivalents of (a) service and (b) program coordination/direction. This is expected to result in a teaching load of 6-8 courses annually (e.g., 2-2-2). Load and release are determined annually and may change depending on School and program needs.
§ Assist with program evaluation and student learning outcomes.
§ The person hired for this position should be qualified to teach a variety of courses in the BIS liberal arts curriculum.

Administrative Responsibilities:
§ Lead and direct all administrative and operational aspects of VPEP, working with FCCW staff and SCPS stakeholders to facilitate course scheduling, student registration, events on campus and at the prison (lectures, final exercises, etc.)

§ In collaboration with the Senior Program Director, provide program oversight including course offerings and delivery; recruitment, training, and professional development of faculty and staff; and development and delivery of other services in partnership with SCPS Student Services and Enrollment Management.
§ Supervise the VPEP Program Coordinator.
§ With stakeholders, develop a clear vision for the sustainability and growth of VPEP
§ Build partnerships, manage relationships, serve as primary liaison, and collaborate with internal and external colleagues in support of VPEP’s mission, including Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women (FCCW), Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC), Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC), UVA Student Financial Services, UVA Libraries, UVA Career Services, SCPS marketing, and other stakeholders serving the incarcerated.
§ Administer grant funds awarded to VPEP in collaboration with the SCPS Financial Business Operations team.
§ Seek external funding to support current and future programs.
§ Represent VPEP at various educational forums and conferences related to higher education in prison, attend on-site and community meetings, and provide updates to external partners.
§ Other duties as assigned.

Service:
§ Fosters positive and productive academic and professional collaborations within SCPS, UVA, and partner organizations to advance the mission of SCPS. Participates in School and/or UVA committees, workgroups, and activities.

Qualifications

A terminal degree from a regionally-accredited institution. ABD status considered.
