Assistant Nurse Manager - Critical Care Unit - Evenings

  • Department: CCU
  • Shift: Shift 2 (flexible hours 8's or 10's)
Position Summary

Applies the nursing process with patients and families, integrating principles that reflect sensitivity to their age-specific/developmental needs, gender, culture, religion, psychosocial and socioeconomic backgrounds in order to provide evidence-based, holistic care in a manner that respects the worth and dignity of each individual. Practices professional nursing as a registered nurse within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act and the American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice and Code for Nurses.

Our Critical Care unit is a 24-bed ICU/Intermediate care unit. Our multidisciplinary team of providers, nurses, and respiratory therapists works together to provide our patients with exceptional care in a great team environment. Our spacious and modern unit allows our teams to perform at the highest level while providing our patients with a healing environment.

The Assistant Nurse Manager for the Critical Care Department will work collaboratively with the Nurse Manager and Nursing Director to lead the clinical operations. These operations will include administrative responsibilities such as scheduling and staffing, as well as acting as the liaison between staff, patients and families, physicians, administrators, and other clinical units.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Nurse Manager and Director in coordinating patient care activities for approximately 70 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff members.
  • Support the Nurse Manager in overseeing patient care delivery and ensuring nursing practices comply with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and evidence-based guidelines.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for nursing staff within the unit and across other departments.
  • Act as a coach and role model for staff and affiliating students; participate in identifying and selecting qualified staff members to serve as preceptors.
  • Assist with staff scheduling, staffing assignments, and ensuring adequate unit coverage based on productivity targets, acuity and patient safety.
  • Participate in onboarding, orientation, and training of new nursing staff.
  • Help manage daily operations of the CCU to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality patient care.
  • Monitor staff performance and provide coaching, feedback, and professional development support to ensure a unit culture founded on accountability, trust and open communication.
  • Participates in the hospital's Quality Improvement initiatives and guides interdisciplinary team members in meeting performance metrics and achieving positive patient outcomes .
  • Monitor compliance with patient safety standards, infection control protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with incident investigations, audits, and corrective action implementation.
  • Support the planning and monitoring of the unit budget in collaboration with the Nurse Manager and Director of Nursing.
  • Assist with resource management, including supplies, equipment, and cost control initiatives.
  • Address and resolve patient care concerns and provide service recovery
  • Assist with performance evaluations and staff development planning.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • BSN
  • Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in Connecticut.
  • Demonstrated competencies in nursing leadership
  • Experience and demonstrated competency in an applicable clinical specialty
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development
  • Ability to work night and evening shift assignments
