Job summary

Aurora University in Aurora, IL is seeking an Assistant Men’s Lacrosse Coach to support student development and assist in the day-to-day operations of the athletics department. You will help with coaching, recruiting, retention, and adherence to NCAA Division III rules, while planning practices and monitoring academic progress for lacrosse student-athletes.

Minimum of two years of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree are required; a Master’s degree is preferred.

  • Knowledge of NCAA and conference rules and ability to follow them.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the head coach by carrying out assigned responsibilities in student development, recruiting, and retention.
  • Understands and follows NCAA and conference rules and regulations; reports any alleged violations.
  • Coaches the position(s) or segments necessary as directed by the head coach; develops coaching philosophy and practice plans; monitors student-athlete academics and safety.
  • Assists in planning, implementation and evaluation of practices; recruits student-athletes; coordinates on-campus visits and understands recruitment rules.
  • Retention and development of current student-athletes through biweekly academic meetings and lacrosse coaching; upholds sportsmanship and professional conduct.
  • Attends athletic department and university meetings; handles confidential information; may drive vehicles for away contests; performs other duties as assigned.

Job description

Position Purpose:

The Assistant Men’s Lacrosse Coach supports learning by overseeing the student development efforts for the university’s athletic department and assists in the day-to-day operations of the department’s athletic events.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Supports the head coach by carrying out assigned responsibilities in student development, recruiting, and retention.
  • Understands and follows NCAA and conference rules and regulations. Follows NCAA rules as outlined in Bylaw 13 in the NCAA Division III Manual. Reports any alleged violations of NCAA, conference, or institutional rules and regulations.
  • Student-Development/Coaching/Teaching
    • Coaches the position(s) or segments necessary as directed by the head coach.
    • Keeps informed of contemporary trends, tactics, techniques and strategies in coaching, which includes developing a philosophy of what to teach and how to implement.
    • Assists in the planning, implementation and evaluation of practices as necessary.
    • Instructs student-athletes on high expectations for academic achievement; monitors the academic progress of student-athletes.
    • Instructs student-athletes on a standard of proper safety.
  • Recruits individual student-athletes or territories as directed by the head coach. Assists student-athletes and their parents in understanding the educational programs and opportunities at Aurora University as well as the opportunities in the athletic program. Answers questions to aid in the understanding of NCAA Division III rules related to recruitment.
    • Assist the head coach to actively recruit qualified student-athletes that meet the academic standards and profile of Aurora University.
    • Identify potential student-athletes through off campus recruitment and coordination of on campus visits in a main focus of this position.
  • Retention and development of current student-athletes is a high priority through bi weekly academic meetings with students and providing individual/group lacrosse coaching.
  • Maintains self-control and poise; provides an example of sportsmanlike conduct for team members, officials, opponents and spectators.
  • Attends athletic department meetings and university community meetings and functions.
  • Handles confidential information with tact and discretion.
  • Drives university or rental vehicles as needed for away contests.
  • Performs special and/or additional duties as required by the VP for Athletics.
Essential Job Requirements:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required. Master’s degree preferred.
Experience:
  • Minimum of two or more years of relevant experience.
Skills:
  • Organizational skills and understanding of compliance standards and regulations.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a wide range of constituents: student-athletes, parents, coaches, media, alumni, administrators, support staff, campus community and the community at-large.
  • Ability to set and achieve or exceed goals and meet deadlines, strong strategic thinking and problem solving abilities.
  • General computer knowledge.
  • Strong knowledge of athletics.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to interact verbally in person, over telephone and via written and electronic media.
  • Ability to move about campus and other locations.
  • Evening and weekend availability is required.
  • Flexibility with an evolving work environment important.
Work Hours:
  • Fall Season: Approximately 8 hours per week from 9/1/26–11/30/26. Spring Season: Approximately 15 hours per week from 1/30/27–5/15/27.
Special Requirements:
  • A valid driver's license and driving record which meets institutional requirements is required.
  • Requires travel between campus locations or to attend off-site meetings.
