Position Summary
Job Summary
The primary responsibility of this position is to instruct and develop student-athletes in alignment with the university’s academic mission. The assistant coach supports the head coach in administering various aspects of the athletic program. Ideal for individuals passionate about athletics and mentorship, this role offers hands-on experience, regardless of prior coaching experience. This is a year-round position with a schedule that varies by season. While some weeks may be more intensive than others, the full-time role averages approximately 1,665 hours annually, aligning with a 0.80 full-time equivalent. Flexibility, including evenings and weekends, is essential. The position offers modest compensation and includes meaningful benefits like health coverage, retirement, meal plan, and paid time off. This position is classified as exempt under FLSA regulations.
Specific Responsibilities
Coaching/Teaching (80%)
· Instruct student athletes in the rules, techniques, and strategies of the sport during practices and competitive events.
· Provide direct instruction, feedback, and mentorship to enhance athletic performance, sportsmanship, and academic growth.
· Promote the physical and mental well-being of all student athletes.
Secondary Duties (20%)
At the discretion of the head coach, the assistant coach may perform a limited range of non-instructional duties. These duties are clearly secondary and comprise only a small portion of the overall role, ensuring that the primary focus remains on the direct instruction and development of student athletes. Secondary duties could include:
· Provide game day support for other athletic programs as assigned, which may include logistical assistance, bench support, or event coordination.
· Assist with the development and implementation of both off-campus and on-campus recruiting strategies to identify and attract qualified student athletes who demonstrate academic and athletic potential.
· Support the planning and execution of organized practices, training sessions, and game strategies.
· Participate in fundraising activities, promotional events, speaking engagements, and alumni outreach as approved by the program leadership.
Required Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree with no experience; or three (3) years of relevant playing and/or coaching experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
· Comprehensive knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations with the ability to maintain compliance and report potential concerns promptly.
· Strong coaching and instructional skills with the ability to communicate concepts clearly and effectively.
· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
· Ability to advise, motivate, and mentor student-athletes while fostering an inclusive and supportive team culture.
· Demonstrated ability to assess developmental needs and provide targeted coaching to improve individual and team performance.
Additional Requirements
· Must possess a valid driver’s license and qualify under the university’s insurance program to operate university or leased vehicles.
· CPR , AED and First Aid certification required.
· This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority ( CSA ) under the Clery Act. The coach must complete annual CSA training and report any Clery Act crimes disclosed to them.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
· Ability to remain in a stationary position (e.g., sitting or standing) and move about athletic facilities or campus grounds as needed to perform coaching duties.
· Ability to engage in practice sessions, game-day activities, and occasional event setup, including lifting or moving equipment and materials up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
· Ability to communicate effectively in both one-on-one and group settings, including giving verbal instructions and providing feedback to student-athletes.
· Ability to travel regularly and work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
· Ability to sustain the physical engagement required to actively coach during practices and competitions, including demonstrating techniques, providing on-field or on-court feedback, and participating in team movement as needed.
