Job summary

Reddick Public Library District in Ottawa, Illinois, seeks a forward-thinking Assistant Director to lead day-to-day operations, supervise key staff, and support the Director in strategic initiatives. The role requires supervisory experience, strong public service skills, and effective English communication.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent combination of work experience with a Bachelor’s degree.
• Public library work experience with supervisory experience preferred.
• Strong professional public service, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
• Ability to communicate well in English, both orally and in writing; Spanish desirable.
• Competency in Microsoft Office products.
• High level of proficiency using Internet, email, online searching, and Windows operating systems in a desktop computing environment.
• Ability to work scheduled evenings and weekends.
• Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Assists Director with day-to-day operations of the library.
• In the absence of the Director, temporarily assumes all responsibilities of Director.
• Directly supervises Technical Services Coordinator & Technology Services Coordinator and oversees their departmental work.
• Acts as head of Interlibrary Loan Department.
• Acts as head of local history collections; acts as main contact for local history inquiries.
• Assists in financial preparation and administration of the library’s annual budget.
• Helps with hiring and training of staff.
• Provides HR assistance; including learning payroll procedures.
• Attends and helps prepare for the monthly Board of Trustee meetings.
