Responsibilities

  • Oversee the general circulation of library materials and maintain/update software for circulation, patrons, and usage statistics.
  • Administer tests to students requiring accommodations and maintain a quiet testing space.
  • Track and record funds collected by the library and coordinate deposits.
  • Provide assistance to all library patrons and BMCC students.
  • Administer student placement tests to determine class placement.
  • Oversee the library work-study schedule and duties.
  • Catalog library materials and create MARC records per Library of Congress standards.
  • Open and close the library on time and maintain a quiet atmosphere.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Library Director.

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Library Director, the incumbent will be responsible for general library functions, student placement and record keeping, and purchasing necessary library items. The Assistant Library Director will work with other departments to perform job duties and must possess excellent organizational and communication skills. The Assistant Library Director will meet academic and professional qualifications, demonstrate dedication to academic excellence and student-centered education, and will support the mission and objectives of the Bay Mills Community College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the general circulation of library materials including maintaining and updating software used to track circulation, patrons, and library usage. The statistics will be compiled as needed for necessary reporting.
  • Responsible for administering tests to students requiring accommodations and maintaining a quiet testing space.
  • Tracking and recording funds collected by the library and turning the proceeds over to the cashier for deposit.
  • Providing assistance to all library patrons and BMCC students.
  • Administering student placement tests to determine accurate class placement recommendations.
  • Overseeing the library work study schedule and duties.
  • Cataloging library materials and creating MARC records for the library materials in accordance with the Library of Congress standards.
  • Opening and closing the library in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Monitoring library floor activities and providing a quiet library atmosphere for all patrons.
  • Performs other assigned duties necessary for proper library function, or as directed by the Library Director.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, exercise substantial independent judgment, and work with limited supervision.
  • Attention to detail and ability to cope with several tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Must have knowledge of office operations with a demonstrated skill in the use of modern office software, including fluency with electronic communication, equipment, and software.
  • Must be able to travel to attend conferences.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must have an excellent past work record.
  • Valid government-issue driver’s license, and ability to be insured by BMCC insurance policies preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and a commitment to the tribal college mission and purpose teaching and learning, high academic standards, and student success.
Education and Experience:
  • Experience or credentials in the field of librarianship OR an Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Three years’ experience working in an office setting, preferred.
  • Must be able to meet standards in an employee background investigation.
  • Excellent written communication and organization skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with others, college and departmental committee experience preferred.
  • Knowledge or experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
  • Knowledge or experience in working with Native Americans, in an educational setting preferred.
