THE POSITION

Join the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) as an Assistant Highway Maintenance Manager and support essential roadway operations across local communities. This role allows you to coordinate crews, oversee maintenance activities, and help deliver safe travel for residents and visitors. Your leadership will strengthen the quality and reliability of county highway systems.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position supports county highway maintenance operations by developing work plans, supervising crews, coordinating inspections, and overseeing emergency responses. Through your work, you will ensure that maintenance needs, resource planning, and project oversight align with operational goals. As an Assistant Highway Maintenance Manager, you will perform the following duties:
- Maintenance Planning: Develop programs and estimates for patching, surface treatment, snow removal, and other roadway activities
- Crew Oversight: Supervise general and specialized maintenance crews and evaluate performance across assigned counties
- Project Inspection: Conduct inspections of highways and bridges and review resource requests for personnel and materials
- Emergency Response: Manage operations during incidents and weather events within assigned areas
- Interagency Agreements: Prepare, negotiate, and monitor maintenance agreements with local government partners
- Personnel Management: Interview candidates, address performance matters, and determine training needs for subordinates

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Dual shifts in effect from November through March.
- Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, upon successful completion of the probationary period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bloomsburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. - Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $69,086.00 (before taxes).

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- One year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Coordinator, Roadway Programs Coordinator, or Transportation Construction Manager 1 ( Commonwealth job titles or equivalent Federal Government job titles, as determined by the Office of Administration) ; or
- Six years of technical experience in highway maintenance, highway construction, or maintenance of heavy equipment used in highway construction projects; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirement:
- All positions require possession of a valid PA non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
