Salem Country Club was founded in 1895 and stands as one of the oldest and most storied private clubs in the United States, having joined the United States Golf Association as its 11th member club. Located on the Sanders Farm tract on Forest Street in Peabody, Massachusetts, the Club has been at its current home since 1926. The Club commissioned Donald Ross to design the course, and member Gordon Rabb designed the iconic white clubhouse that remains the heart of the property today. Salem is a family-focused, golf-first community of 375 members where camaraderie, tradition, and an uncompromising commitment to the member experience define daily life at the Club.
The Club has consistently been listed on rankings of the top Golf Courses in the state and has previously received national recognition. Ross's original push-up greens and bunker complexes remain central to the course's character, preserved through careful restoration work. The layout is broadly considered to house the finest set of Ross green complexes in existence, more varied, more demanding, and more rewarding than any other course in his renowned portfolio. The course is complemented by extensive practice facilities, an inviting clubhouse, a pool, fitness center, and tennis courts, offering a full-service club environment befitting its history and membership.
Salem has hosted six U.SGA Championships, including the 1932 U.S. Women's Amateur, the 1954 and 1984 U.S. Women's Opens, the 1977 U.S. Senior Amateur, and the 2001 and 2017 U.S. Senior Opens. The club is scheduled to host three additional USGA Championships: the 2032 U.S. Mid-Amatuer, the 2036 U.S. Senior Women's Open, and the 2041 U.S. Senior Open, cementing its place among the most consequential championship venues in American golf.
