ATHLETICS (BA-ATHL-IUBLA)

Department Specific Responsibilities
  • Assists with the daily operation, maintenance, and presentation of the Pfau Course at Indiana University.
  • Supports the Golf Course Superintendent in planning, coordinating, and monitoring turfgrass maintenance, irrigation systems, landscape management, equipment usage, and course preparation for daily play, tournaments, and special events.
  • Provides operational oversight of golf course maintenance activities and assists in ensuring exceptional playing conditions through sound agronomic practices, environmental stewardship, and efficient resource management.
  • Assists in managing golf course maintenance operations, including maintenance planning, irrigation monitoring, equipment coordination, and response to operational issues affecting course conditions.
  • Coordinates environmental stewardship and safety procedures with university personnel, regulatory agencies, and external vendors when necessary.
  • Performs scheduled and ad hoc inspections to identify turfgrass, irrigation, landscape, course conditioning, and property maintenance needs.
  • Assists with planning and execution of golf course improvement projects, including budgeting, implementation, and completion.
  • Prepares estimates for maintenance projects and repairs and supports cost-effective management of operational resources.
  • Coordinates completion of work orders and corrective maintenance activities and monitors progress on assigned projects.
  • Monitors inventory and equipment conditions, maintains required records, and assists with procurement of supplies and materials.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation and responds to weather-related events, irrigation issues, and other emergency situations affecting golf course operations.
  • Assists in supervising and coordinating student employees, temporary staff, and seasonal maintenance personnel.
  • Recommends operational improvements that enhance course conditions, efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability.
General Responsibilities
  • Manages building operations and maintenance such as maintenance planning, security/access control, and emergency response. Coordinates fire and life safety, environmental safety procedures, and planning with university personnel and external agencies where required.
  • Performs periodic scheduled and ad hoc inspections to identify cleaning and property maintenance needs; participates in all aspects of project development, budget, implementation, and completion.
  • Prepares estimates for repairs and ensures building maintenance falls within allocated budget with an emphasis on cost-containment.
  • Coordinates fulfillment of work orders for corrective action and routine maintenance; monitors progress, escalating especially complex matters as needed.
  • Monitors and maintains inventory levels and equipment/asset conditions through regular inspections and completion of required documentation. Orders supplies/equipment when necessary.
  • Participates in and maintains an on-call rotation to cover emergency situations.
  • May provide guidance to non-exempt Licensed and Skilled Trades staff or lower-level Facility Operations Specialists.
  • May make procedural and process recommendations to supervisor for improved operational efficiency.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in facilities management, project management, business operations, or related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years in facilities management, project management, business operations, or related field.

Preferred

  • 5 years of experience at a high-end golf course, resort, championship, collegiate, or private club facility.
  • Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting golf course, grounds, landscape, athletic field, or turfgrass operations.
  • Experience with Toro 2-Wire irrigation systems and Lynx irrigation software.
  • Experience with irrigation system monitoring, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Experience supervising seasonal, temporary, or student employees.
  • Knowledge of turfgrass establishment, fertilization programs, pest management, and cultural practices.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Indiana pesticide applicator license.
  • Familiarity with John Deere golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Participation in GCSAA educational programs or professional development opportunities.
