Title: Athletic Coach

Location: Senior High School

Qualifications:

  1. Coaching Authorization or Endorsement issued by the Iowa Department of Education.
  2. Demonstrated proficiency to perform specific assignment.
  3. Preference given to successful experience at the assignment/level.
  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports to: Activities Director

Supervises: Students, Assistants

Job Goals and Responsibilities

To create a positive athletics program that fosters student learning and personal growth, establish effective rapport with students, families, and peers, and guide students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge for success in college, careers, and civic life. The coach is expected to:

  1. Hold organizational meetings and encourage participation.
  2. Assess players' skills and assign positions.
  3. Develop practice schedules for individual and team development.
  4. Work with the athletics director on scheduling facilities.
  5. Assign duties to assistants as needed.
  6. Coach and instruct players on rules, regulations, and techniques.
  7. Observe players to identify improvement needs.
  8. Determine game strategies based on team capabilities.
  9. Maintain standards of pupil behavior and supervise athletes.
  10. Monitor academic performance and encourage high standards.
  11. Follow procedures for athlete injuries.
  12. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding athletic performance.
  13. Follow all regulations governing the athletic program.
  14. Model sportsmanship and appropriate conduct.
  15. Promote the sport through communication with media and organizations.
  16. Maintain equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  17. Develop and manage awards policies.
  18. Participate in school activities like parent nights and award ceremonies.
  19. Maintain relevant records and documentation.
  20. Model nondiscriminatory practices.
  21. Attend professional development activities.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.
