Job summary

The Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is seeking an energetic Assistant Football Coach to work with middle school-aged youth in Bridgeport, CT. The role focuses on coaching, practice planning, and player development while upholding program standards and safety.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assist in organizing team prospects and encourage participation in sport.
  • Assess players' skills and assign team positions.
  • Attend and assist at all practices, be early to practice sites.
  • Implement a regular practice schedule for individual and team development.
  • Coordinate with program director to schedule facilities for practices and competitions.
  • Coach and instruct players on rules, equipment, and techniques.
  • Observe players to determine needs for improvement.
  • Maintain standards of behavior and supervise athletes.
  • Monitor academic performance to ensure eligibility.
  • Follow procedures for athlete injuries and safety.
  • Promote the sport to community partners.
  • Handle equipment, supplies and uniforms with care.
  • Participate in events like parents night and award nights.

Job description

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is looking for energetic and responsible coach who has a passion for working with children to join our organization in our Football League. This position will help motivate student athletes to develop an appreciate the sport. Coaches will also be responsible for coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. A primary function of this and every other job at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is to ensure that each member, guest, and visitor receives the highest caliber of service.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
  • Assist in organizational meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate in the sport.
  • Assesses player's skills and assigns team positions.
  • Assist and attend all practice and be at the practice site 15 minutes prior to practice starting.
  • Implements a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development.
  • Works with the program director in scheduling facilities for practices and competition.
  • Coaches and instructs players, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Observes players during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of members behavior and always provides proper supervision of athletes.
  • Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met.
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury.
  • Follows state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program.
  • Models sports‑like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Acts as a team representative and promotes the sport by communicating with community partners.
  • Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  • Participates in special activities to include parent's night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
  • Interact in a positive manner with staff, youth members, parents, and volunteers.
  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation.
  • This position may require standing for long periods of time.
  • This position may require lifting items up to 50lbs.
ADDITIONAL REPSONSIBILITIES:
  • Experience working with young children, especially middle school students.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Basic computer skills.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • USA Football Certification.
  • CPR & AED Certification (First Aid not required).
  • Boys & Girls Club or youth organization experience preferred.
  • Experience working with youth grades 3rd-8th.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior.
  • Knowledge of youth development strategies.
  • Ability to work with youth and families from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
COMPENSATION (one‑time stipend payment; varies by position):

Assistant Football Coach: $1,000.00
