The City of Onalaska is seeking an Assistant Fire Chief who will serve as EMS Service Director and assist the Fire Chief with department leadership and policy development.

Ideal candidates bring 8+ years in fire service with supervisory experience and appropriate Wisconsin certifications. The role includes budget oversight, training coordination, and public safety education, with a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• Requires an Associate degree in Fire Science or closely related field; a Bachelor's degree is preferred.
• Eight years of progressively responsible experience in fire service with supervisory and collective bargaining experience preferred.
• Certifications: State Wisconsin or IFSAC Fire Officer I/II, Fire Instructor I/II, Fire Inspector I/II.
• Certified as a Wisconsin EMT-B or National Registry EMT; valid driver’s license.
• Knowledge of fire service management, budgets, policies, and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

• Serve as second in command and act for the Fire Chief in their absence.
• Oversee fire code enforcement including reporting, warnings, and violations follow-up.
• Develop and monitor department budget and explore grants or alternative funding.
• Plan, coordinate and supervise training, EMS and public education programs.
• Assist with plan reviews and department policy development under Fire Chief direction.
• Maintain equipment, inventory, and testing to meet state and NFPA standards.
