Job description

Basic Function

Assists teachers by working with Exceptional Children (EC) to achieve the goals of the student(s)' Individual Education Program(s) (IEPs) and provide access to general education as appropriate.

Essential Functions
  1. Assists in the instruction of individual EC students or groups of EC students in all curricular areas as directed by the teacher.
  2. Collects data to document individual student progress on IEP goals.
  3. Plans and works with teachers in devising instructional strategies.
  4. Assists with setup, use, and management of materials, adapted equipment, and/or technology devices for classroom and individual students.
  5. Supervises during emergency drills, assemblies, specials (e.g., PE, art, recess), field trips, and other school functions on and off campus.
  6. Acts as a bus monitor when special needs of EC students are identified by the IEP team.
  7. Alerts teachers to any problems or special information about individual students.
  8. Participates in in-service training for professional growth.
  9. Assists in checking materials, correcting papers, supervising, and testing as directed.
  10. Helps keep bulletin boards and learning centers current.
  11. Assists with school routines and transitions.
  12. Supports student attendance procedures, record keeping, ordering materials, and other duties as assigned.
  13. Provides physical assistance to students in areas such as self-help, clothing, toileting, and feeding.
  14. Assists therapists and teachers with occupational and physical therapy duties and mainstreaming classes.
  15. Provides physical assistance to students with writing, note-taking, and responses under teacher supervision.
  16. Lifts, positions, assists with walking, and pushes wheelchairs as needed.
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of regulations related to exceptional children.
  • Ability to use current technology and communication devices relevant to disabilities.
  • Effective communication skills in oral and written formats.
  • Knowledge of classroom management and differentiation techniques.
  • Understanding of the IEP process.
  • Research-based instruction and behavior management techniques.
  • Compliance with guidelines and curriculum delivery skills.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to provide personal and medical assistance to students.
  • Monitoring student performance using various data collection methods.
  • Ability to teach others to use technology or equipment.
Education and Experience
  • Completion of an Associate's Degree or two years of higher education (48 credit hours), passing a formal assessment, or completion of specific training programs as required.
  • Preferred: Associate's Degree with a concentration in Education.
  • Preferred: One year of experience working with EC children.
