Job description

Our Assistant District Engineer (Operations) position has full managerial authority and accountability for human and fiscal resources, as well as other resources needed to deliver maintenance programs district-wide, addressing customer needs. The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Providing management and direction for the district as a member of the District Management Team (DMT).
  • Offering leadership and management within the Operations Management Group (OMG), Maintenance Business Management Team (MBMT), and Operations Advisory Committee (OAC) to ensure program accomplishment and constituent satisfaction.
  • Managing and providing engineering leadership in areas including:
  • Snow and Ice Removal operations
  • Pavement Repair
  • Drainage Maintenance
  • Traffic Safety Services
  • Landscape/Roadside Maintenance
  • Fleet Management and Purchasing
  • Roadway Regulations

Detroit Lakes offers year-round recreation with 412 lakes within 25 miles, a 1-mile-long public sand beach, and proximity to Fargo/Moorhead. The area features skiing, fishing, bird watching, hiking, biking, skating, mountain biking, snowmobiling, boating, and 8 golf courses.

Housing options include lakeshore properties, residential city and rural developments, hobby farms, apartments, condominiums, and townhouses. Education facilities include two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, parochial schools, and Minnesota State Community and Technical College.

  • Licensure as a professional Civil Engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design (AELSLAGID). A temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided if obtaining licensure through Comity.
  • At least five (5) years of professional post-registration engineering experience, with a minimum of three (3) years at the Engineer Principal level or higher, managing complex projects or programs and supervising engineers.

  • Leadership: Demonstrated leadership in managing initiatives, developing solutions, and motivating teams.
  • Fiscal: Experience managing large, complex budgets and resource allocation.
  • Technical: Knowledge of engineering principles, Minnesota’s construction industry, transportation technology, and MnDOT policies.
  • Communications/Human Relations: Strong oral and written communication skills, stakeholder engagement, and conflict management.
