Job description

Our Assistant District Engineer (Operations) position holds full managerial authority and accountability for human, fiscal, and other resources necessary to deliver maintenance programs district-wide, addressing customer needs. The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Providing consistent management and direction for the district as a member of the District Management Team (DMT).
  • Leading, managing, and directing state and district maintenance programs as part of the Operations Management Group (OMG), Maintenance Business Management Team (MBMT), and Operations Advisory Committee (OAC).
  • Managing and providing engineering leadership in areas such as:
  1. Snow and Ice Removal operations
  2. Pavement Repair
  3. Drainage Maintenance
  4. Traffic Safety Services
  5. Landscape/Roadside Maintenance
  6. Fleet Management and Purchasing
  7. Roadway Regulations

Detroit Lakes offers year-round recreation with 412 lakes within 25 miles, a 1-mile-long public beach, and proximity to Fargo/Moorhead. The area features skiing, fishing, bird watching, hiking, biking, skating, mountain biking, snowmobiling, boating, and eight golf courses.

Housing options include lakeshore, residential city, rural developments, hobby farms, apartments, condominiums, and townhouses. The local school district comprises two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school, with additional options at three parochial schools and Minnesota State Community and Technical College.

  • Licensure as a professional Civil Engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design (AELSLAGID). A temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided if obtaining licensure through Comity.
  • At least five (5) years of professional post-registration engineering experience, with a minimum of three (3) years at the Engineer Principal level or higher, managing complex projects or programs, including supervising engineers.

  • Communications/Human Relations: Excellent oral and written communication skills, negotiation, and conflict management abilities.
