Job summary

Jobtailor in Oklahoma is seeking a Juris Doctorate attorney to prosecute juvenile cases, including Juvenile Deprived, Juvenile Delinquent, and Youthful Offender matters. You will represent the State in juvenile courts across Lincoln and Pottawatomie Counties, handling arraignments, motions, and trials.

You will collaborate with law enforcement, court personnel, and defense counsel, review evidence and charging decisions, and prepare memoranda on statutes and Victims’ Bill of Rights compliance.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • Active Oklahoma Bar Association license.
  • Familiarity with juvenile law strongly preferred.
  • Excellent oral advocacy, legal analysis, and writing.
  • Strong organizational and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of state/federal statutes, regulations, and trial procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Prosecute juvenile cases, including Juvenile Deprived, Juvenile Delinquent, and Youthful Offender cases.
  • Represent the State of Oklahoma in juvenile courts in Lincoln and Pottawatomie Counties.
  • Handle arraignments, motions, pre-trial hearings, conferences, and evidentiary and non-evidentiary motions.
  • Conduct bench and jury trials as lead counsel.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, law enforcement, court personnel, defense attorneys, agencies, and the public.
  • Attend meetings with community and law enforcement partners.
  • Review law-enforcement charging decisions and recommend or make changes as needed.
  • Meet with victim families, direct investigations, and provide updates to agencies and supervising attorneys.
  • Review evidentiary reports, interview victims and witnesses, and provide discovery to defense counsel.
  • Review case files and statutes to determine case-resolution recommendations and confer with defense counsel.
  • Monitor court decisions and legislation affecting Oklahoma law and prepare memoranda.
  • Apply applicable laws, rules, guidelines, and Victims’ Bill of Rights requirements.
  • Interact professionally with victims, juveniles, families, and witnesses.
  • Manage crises in a high-stress, dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Occasionally appear in adult courthouse sessions and travel to other district courts.
  • Complete administrative duties and travel weekly to specified courthouses.

Job description

  • Attend meetings with community and law enforcement partners
  • Review law-enforcement charging decisions and recommend or make changes as needed
  • Meet with victim families, direct investigations, partner on forensic interviews, and provide updates to relevant agencies and supervising attorneys
  • Review evidentiary reports, identify and interview victims and witnesses, prepare and provide discovery to defense counsel
  • Review case files, statutes, case law, and victim input to determine case-resolution recommendations and confer with defense counsel
  • Monitor court decisions and legislation affecting Oklahoma law and prepare memoranda
  • Apply applicable laws, rules, guidelines, and Victims’ Bill of Rights requirements
  • Interact professionally with victims, juveniles, families, and witnesses
  • Manage crises in a high-stress, dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Occasionally appear in adult courthouse sessions and travel to other district court locations
  • Follow personnel and accounting policies and participate in relevant training
  • Collaborate with peers, communicate timely notifications, complete assignments, and perform administrative duties including filing, faxing, and photocopying
  • Perform other duties assigned by the District Attorney or designee
  • Travel weekly to the Pottawatomie District Courthouse in Shawnee and Lincoln County District Courthouse in Chandler, with occasional local travel

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from accredited law school
  • Admitted to and in good standing with Oklahoma Bar Association license to practice in Oklahoma
  • Familiarity with the practice of juvenile law strongly preferred
  • Excellent oral advocacy, legal analysis, and legal writing and editing skills
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal communication, problem solving, and teamwork skills
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal statutes and regulations, constitutional law, Oklahoma Constitution, regulatory policies and procedures, trial and hearing procedures, rules of evidence, investigation techniques, legal research methods, and oral and written communication
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to foster a positive, collaborative working environment
  • Ability to prioritize time-sensitive matters and meet all deadlines
  • Self-starter with attention to detail, discretion with confidential information, teamwork, positive attitude, willingness to learn, and adaptability
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation
  • Preference to live within Lincoln or Pottawatomie County
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods and lift boxes up to 20 lbs.
