Job summary

The American Society of Interior Designers in Kansas City, MO is seeking an Assistant Distribution Designer for a 12+ month contract onsite.

Under licensed engineer supervision you will assist in designing 2.4kV to 34.5kV distribution projects, prepare sketches, BOMs, and perform voltage drop and pole loading calculations.

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor or associate degree in drafting/ CAD, several years of utility design experience, and proficiency with AutoCAD and GIS.

  • AutoCAD experience and familiarity with GIS and distribution systems.
  • 2+ years of experience in utility or power industry preferred.
  • Basic distribution design software experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist licensed engineer to create designs for 2.4kV to 34.5kV distribution projects.
  • Work with project team through design and construction, adapting plans to budget and client needs.
  • Prepare distribution voltage packages for overhead and underground projects including equipment installation and feeder design.
  • Prepare sketches, cost estimates, BOMs, and other deliverables.
  • Perform distribution calculations such as voltage drop and pole loading.

Job description

Immediate need for a talented Assistant Distribution Designer. This is a 12+ months contract opportunity with long-term potential and is located in Kansas City, MO (Onsite).

Pay Range: $32 to $37/hourly. Employee benefits include, but are not limited to, health insurance (medical, dental, vision), 401(k) plan, and paid sick leave (depending on work location).

Key Responsibilities:
  • The Assistant Distribution Designer will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments on a variety of 2.4kV to 34.5kV overhead and underground utility distribution projects.
  • The Assistant Distribution Designer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting electrical distribution plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.
  • Assist in the design of distribution projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
  • Assist in the preparation and development of distribution voltage packages for both overhead and underground projects, including distribution equipment installation, feeder replacement, cable replacement, and new feeder design.
  • Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, bill of materials, and other required deliverables.
  • Perform various distribution calculations, including cable pulling, voltage drop, and pole loading calculations.
  • Apply basic knowledge of NESC standards and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.
  • Assist with research and compiles project-related data as required by the project managers.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to meet project objectives and deadlines.
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously, from initial assignment to completion.
Key Requirements and Technology Experience:
  • Key skills; Must have a College Degree in CAD Design/Drafting or related technology field and min 3 years of experience supporting Design/Drafting for Electric Utility/T&D/OH or UG Distribution Design projects.
  • Must have experience with AutoCAD and familiarity with GIS and Distribution Systems.
  • Bachelor Degree in drafting technology or related field and 2 years related experience Required OR Associate Degree and 3 years related experience Required OR 4 years progressive detailing and design experience.
  • 2+ years of experience, preferably in utility or power industry
  • Basic distribution design software experience preferred.
  • DDS, ArcFM, AUD, BOUD, etc.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software, GIS software, and other design tools.
  • Basic knowledge of electric distribution infrastructure and construction techniques preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in both a team environment and independently.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, and organization skills.
