Job summary

University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School seeks an experienced Assistant Director of Energy Resources to oversee daily operations of the Power Plant, ensuring reliable steam, chilled water, and normal/emergency electricity for campus facilities. You will supervise engineers, electricians, and technicians, coordinate external contractors, and support capital planning and maintenance programs.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to a Trades’ Apprenticeship Training with ten years operating experience in a large modern power plant.
• Massachusetts First Class Stationary Engineer’s License required; five years as a First/Second Class Engineer; supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of utility rate structures and deregulation.
• Strong communication and organization skills with industrial, commercial entities and educational/medical institutions.
• Knowledge of and experience with union contracts.
• Ability to communicate and negotiate university requirements to run utilities facility.

Responsibilities

• Develop training programs for Power Plant staff to ensure appropriate skill level.
• Foster open communications by holding departmental meetings.
• Participate in development and implementation of department goals.
• Track utility usage and operational expenses for the medical center.
• Assist in capital planning for equipment purchases and replacements.
• Supervise Co-Generation Engineers, High Voltage Electricians, Instrument & Control Technicians, Firemen and other staff.
• Coordinate supervision of external contracted labor in the Power Plant.
• Oversee safe operation of a high pressure 1,100 psi plant and campus steam distribution.
• Distribute Grid and Plant generated High Voltage electricity to campus buildings.
• Maintain inventory levels of spare parts and coordinate preventive maintenance program.
