The Greater Richmond Children's Choir (GRCC) is seeking an assistant director and piano accompanist for its training ensemble in Richmond, Virginia.

The role is available immediately and involves accompanying and assisting in directing the Treble and Concert Choirs, plus participation in seasonal camps and community concerts.

Qualifications

• Degree in relevant field (choral education) is required.

Responsibilities

• Accompany and assist in directing Treble and Concert Choirs on Tue 4:45–6:30 PM, with some rehearsal prep.
• Assist teaching during GRCC's summer camp (July 26–30, 2027).
• Participate in Saturday rehearsals once per semester and perform in 10–14 community concerts.
• Tour with the choir every other year (domestic and international).
• Support recruitment and fundraising efforts, and occasional additional rehearsals.

Now entering its 30 th season, the Greater Richmond Children's Choir has performed on four continents and in dozens of languages, earning acclaim for its excellence and diversity. Led by Artistic Director Crystal Jonkman and Associate Director Roshan Chakane, GRCC welcomes students ages 8 to 18, fostering musical growth through high-quality choral education and performance. Supported by generous community contributions, GRCC offers tuition and travel scholarships to over one-third of its members, ensuring accessibility for all. Beginner and advanced choristers alike are welcome to join.

JOB DESCRIPTION

• Primarily accompany and assist in directing the Treble Choir (entry level choir) and Concert Choir (intermediate choir) on Tuesdays from 4:45 - 6:30 PM, with directors arriving 30 minutes beforehand. May be asked to fill in occasionally on other rehearsals.
• Accompany and assist in teaching during GRCC's annual summer camp -July 26-30, 2027, 8:30-1:30
• Participate in Saturday rehearsals as scheduled once per semester
• Perform with the choir groups in 10-14 community concerts during the season at venues throughout the Richmond area, as scheduled.See grcchoir.org/performances.
• Periodic additional rehearsals as needed.
• Participate in recruiting members and fundraising efforts.
• Tour with the choir every other year (domestic and international).

QUALIFICATIONS

• Degree in relevant field (choral education)
• Prior experience as a choral accompanist, music educator and/or conductor
• Strong technical and artistic abilities
• Excellent music sight-reading skills
• Excellent advance rehearsal preparation of both piano and voice parts
• Strong understanding of the young voice and choral techniques
• High level of responsibility and professionalism
• A pleasant demeanor with strong communication skills
• Enjoys working with young singers

The accompanist/assistant director is considered a valued member of the GRCC artistic staff, and is expected to have a vested interest in the students' growth and continued success.

Annual salary range $4,000-4,500 (approx. $36-41/contact hour) based on experience and qualifications. Can be paid on a 10 or 12-month schedule as preferred. Opportunity exists for an expanded role with additional salary.
