Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) – RN/ LPN

Reports To: Director of Nursing
Supervises: Quality Assurance Nurse, Treatment Nurse, Rehab Staff, Licensed Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs)

Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) works under the direction of the Director of Nursing (DON) and manages the daily operations of the nursing department, including staffing, quality assurance, and resident care monitoring. This role ensures compliance with all regulatory guidelines and promotes high standards of nursing practice within a long-term care/skilled nursing facility.

(ADON) – RN/ LPN Key Responsibilities:

• Assist in reviewing, interpreting, and implementing facility and nursing policies and procedures.




• Conduct daily rounds to observe operations, ensure resident rights, safety, and infection control compliance.




• Collaborate with the Quality Assurance Nurse to review incident reports and implement corrective actions.




• Communicate effectively with residents, families, and staff.




• Review CNA applications, verify credentials and references, conduct interviews, and oversee hiring processes.




• Prepare and maintain CNA staffing schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and overtime control.




• Maintain current CNA job descriptions and performance evaluations.




• Schedule and lead CNA meetings; identify and resolve performance or service issues.




• Counsel, discipline, and terminate CNA staff as needed, in coordination with the DON and Administrator.




• Supervise and adjust daily nursing staff assignments as required.




• Attend Medicare and Care Plan meetings.




• Participate in Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities, audits, and reports.




• Serve on facility committees and complete required reports.




• Assist the DON with admission inquiries and related documentation.




• Work with the Psychiatrist and nursing staff to monitor residents receiving psychotropic medications, ensuring compliance with OBRA guidelines and consent documentation.




• Audit admission/readmission charts and ensure completion of required information.




• Conduct quarterly audits of medication passes and CNA skills.




• Participate in monthly physician order recaps and ensure timely completion of monthly summaries.




• Manage IV supply inventory and order as approved by the DON.




• Participate in Dining Room audits and coordinate with ancillary departments (laundry, dietary, therapy, etc.).




• Assume duties of the Director of Nursing during absences.




• Rotate on-call responsibilities and work the floor as needed in staffing shortages.




• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing.
