Job summary

Occidental College seeks an Assistant Director of Environmental Health and Safety to lead compliance, training, and risk management across campus. The role reports to the Assistant Vice President, Facilities Management, and ensures OSHA, EPA, Cal/OSHA compliance while fostering a safety culture.

The position involves supervising EH&S staff, managing hazardous materials, coordinating with HR on accommodations, and supporting emergency response efforts.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or industrial hygiene or equivalent.
• FEMA ICS 100 certified.
• HAZWOPER 24-Hour Operations Level certification or higher or must be obtained within three months of employment.
• Two years of experience in the environmental health field.
• Valid California driver’s license and must be able to maintain the College’s designated driver status.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications.
• Demonstrated ability to be detail‑oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
• Strong commitment to a quality work product.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
• Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.

Responsibilities

• EH&S program management and compliance across campus with regulatory standards.
• Develop and deliver EH&S training for faculty, staff, and students.
• Conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
• Collaborate on laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, and compliance programs.
• Support sustainability and campus collaboration initiatives.
• Prepare reports and maintain EH&S documentation systems and budgets.
• Assist in emergency management and preparedness planning and coordination.
