The Hartford is seeking an Actuarial Reserving professional for the Construction and Energy sectors. This key role focuses on quarterly reserve reviews and involves communication with various stakeholders. This position is a key role within the Actuarial Reserving department, supporting Construction and Energy Workers’ Compensation and Loss Sensitive lines. The position is primarily responsible for the quarterly reserve review process, as well as ongoing claim monitoring and analytics. In addition, the role will support the Premium reserve analyses, which is a unique opportunity to experience the reserving function from a different angle.
This position also provides opportunities to be involved in cross-team and individual projects, analysis of emerging trends, and exploring the development of new reserving techniques and analytical tools. The position will partner with Claims, Underwriting, Pricing, and Product to be a leading source of expertise on the Construction and Energy industry verticals within Middle & Large Business, including Workers’ Compensation, Commercial Auto, and General Liability coverage dynamics and trends. Candidates should have strong technical and analytical skills, be able to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences, and be able to influence business partners.

Gain in-depth knowledge of the Construction and Energy products, including the Workers’ Compensation, General Liability, and Commercial Auto coverages, as well as an understanding of claims operations, tools and processes
Become an expert in both basic and advanced reserving techniques, with an opportunity for innovation by building new reserving techniques and analytical tools and streamlining existing processes
Strengthen communication skills by presenting quarterly reserve review results to both technical and non-technical audiences
Build upon technical and analytical skills by utilizing R and SQL for reserving techniques, tools and analyses
Major responsibilities of this rotation include
Perform quarterly reserve reviews and support ongoing monitoring for Guaranteed Cost WC and Loss Sensitive (WC, GL & Auto) lines within Construction and Energy
Perform semi-annual reviews of the Premium Audit reserves
Develop new analytic tools and enhance current tools to improve the accuracy and efficiency of reserve reviews and to deliver improved insights to business partners
Become an expert regarding emerging internal & external trends in loss experience, changes within claims operations, and underwriting trends
Conduct sophisticated actuarial analyses and effectively communicate findings and recommendations to business partners
Drive and enhance the partnership between Actuarial, Claims, and the business functions
Experience & Skills
Minimum 3+ years of experience in insurance or related industry.
Progress toward ACAS/FCAS or ASA/FSA preferred but not required. We will consider filling this role as part of our actuarial student program for a qualified candidate meeting requirements for entry into the program.
Very strong technical, analytical and data skills
Excel required and experience with SQL, R and/or Python preferred.
Experience working independently and as part of a team.
Self-motivation, creativity, time-management, project-management, and relationship building will be beneficial in this role.
Salary $93,120 - $163,120
This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
