Job description

Hendrickson High School is seeking an Assistant Speech & Debate Coach and ELA/Social Studies Teacher. The position includes teaching two sections of Debate and four sections of advanced English Language Arts or Social Studies courses, depending on the candidate's certification (ELA/Social Studies certification or SOE), experience, and campus needs.

The position comes with additional stipends, a set assistant coach stipend and additional stipends based on involvement coaching UIL events.

Teaching Responsibilities

• Teach two Debate courses, working with students at the novice and/or advanced competitive level.
• Teach four advanced ELA or Social Studies courses, based on certification and campus needs.
• Develop engaging, rigorous instruction aligned with Texas standards and district curriculum.
• Support students in developing research, argumentation, writing, public speaking, and critical-thinking skills.
• Collaborate with department and campus colleagues to support student achievement.

Speech & Debate Responsibilities

The Assistant Coach will work alongside the Director of Speech & Debate to support Hendrickson's competitive program. Responsibilities may include:

• Coaching students in speech and debate events.
• Assisting students with research, case construction, speech development, and tournament preparation.
• Attending and coaching at local, state, and national tournaments throughout the school year.
• Supervising students during tournament travel.
• Assisting with tournament entries, logistics, and team organization.
• Supporting novice development and helping students transition into varsity competition.
• Helping maintain a positive, inclusive, and academically rigorous team culture.
• Assisting with recruitment and continued growth of the Speech & Debate program.
• Supporting the hosting of tournaments and other team events.
