The Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs at the University of Georgia School of Medicine (UGA SOM) leads onboarding, advancement, and wellbeing initiatives, partnering with department chairs and HR to support career development and policy adherence.

This role oversees onboarding protocols, promotion guidance, and faculty services, with a focus on credibility, data-driven improvements, and cross‑unit collaboration to enhance faculty success.

Qualifications

• MD, DO, PhD, or other terminal degree in a health professions or related field.
• Established record of providing consultation and guidance to faculty and academic leaders regarding promotion, tenure, career progression, performance improvement, and professional development.
• Knowledge of faculty affairs policies, procedures, and best practices in academic medicine and higher education, including promotion, tenure, and academic advancement processes.
• Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills with the ability to establish credibility and trust with faculty, department chairs, senior leadership, and administrative partners.

Responsibilities

• In coordination with UGA SOM Department Chairs and Human Resources, manage and update onboarding for newly appointed faculty to facilitate early success and connection to the UGA SOM community.
• Develop and maintain standardized onboarding protocols, orientation materials, and a new faculty career success series tailored to the UGA SOM context.
• Serve as a contact for new faculty during their initial appointment period, connecting them to policies, resources, and key personnel.
• Develop/revise the UGA SOM faculty handbook and other website resources.
• Collaborate with Chairs, HR, and administrative offices to ensure timely credentialing and completion of institutional requirements.
• Solicit and act on feedback from new faculty to continually improve onboarding.
• Advise faculty at all ranks on promotion pathways, forms, systems, timelines, criteria, and portfolio preparation in accordance with policies.
• Provide individual consultations to faculty at critical career junctures including onboarding, pre-promotion, CV review, scholarship development, career challenges, and exit conversations.
• Provide workshops or mechanisms to support faculty in building competitive promotion packets.
• Provide updates to faculty regarding promotion and tenure development opportunities.
• Be a conduit to Faculty Offices to clarify or mediate promotion/tenure applications.
• Provide advocacy for faculty opportunities inside and outside the SOM.

About the College/Unit/Department The University of Georgia School of Medicine was founded in 2024 and received preliminary accreditation in 2026.

The establishment of a new public medical school at UGA comes as the state faces a significant shortage of medical professionals. The population of Georgia, the nation’s eighth-largest state, has surged to approximately 11 million residents, straining existing medical infrastructure and resulting in longer wait times for appointments and reduced access to care. Faculty Onboarding

In coordination with UGA SOM Department Chairs and Human Resources, manage and update annually a welcoming, comprehensive onboarding experience for newly appointed faculty that facilitates early success and connection to the UGA SOM community.

• Develop and maintain standardized onboarding protocols, orientation materials, and a new faculty career success series tailored to the UGA SOM context
• Serve as an important point of contact for new faculty during their initial appointment period, connecting them to institutional policies, resources, and key personnel
• Develop/revise the UGA SOM faculty handbook and other website resources
• Collaborate with Department Chairs, Human Resources, and administrative offices to ensure timely credentialing and completion of institutional requirements
• Solicit and act on feedback from new faculty to continually improve the onboarding experience

Academic Advancement and Promotion

• In collaboration with the department chairs, advise faculty at all ranks on promotion pathways, forms, systems, timelines, criteria, and portfolio preparation in accordance with UGA SOM and UGA policies
• Provide individual consultations to faculty at critical career junctures including onboarding, pre‑promotion, CV review, scholarship development, career challenges, and intent‑to‑leave conversations
• Provide workshops or other mechanisms to support faculty in building competitive promotion packets
• Provide timely updates to faculty regarding available promotion and tenure development opportunities at UGA
• Be a conduit to the UGA Faculty Offices to clarify or mediate any promotion/tenure applications

Faculty Well-Being

• Foster a culture of faculty recognition by celebrating achievements, milestones, and contributions to the school’s mission
• Partner with UGA SOM Office of Personalized Health & Well Being and UGA Office of Faculty Affairs to promote wellness activities and resources to ensure faculty have access to well‑being support and community

Faculty Success Career Services

• Coordinate mentorship pairing and peer integration to promote early engagement and belonging
• Use data to monitor success of the mentorship and revise as needed
• Provide faculty vitality programming including career development workshops, leadership development, and mid- and late‑career resources
• Coordinate with HR on exit interviews and use data from interviews to inform improvements to increase faculty retention
• In coordination with Office of UME , Office of GME , Assistant Dean of Faculty Development, and Department Chairs, develop and promote programs that support the engagement and success of volunteer adjunct clinical faculty
• Offer Unit level mediation services and conflict resolution support to faculty members
• Advise the SOM Dean, Department Chairs and HR on USG , UGA and UGA SOM on updated faculty policies, particularly when addressing academic productivity, timelines and behaviors
• With the SOM Department Chairs and HR, analyze collated reports on faculty success milestones including professionalism, advancement, promotion/tenure, productivity and significant achievements; report these periodically to the Dean and faculty
• Serve as an ad hoc (non‑voting) member of the Faculty Honors and Awards Committee
• Offer faculty success educational programming that includes best practices and habits for career success
• Provide professionalism education programming for faculty, including content on communication, conflict resolution, and inclusive professional conduct
• Serve as a resource and advisor to Department Chairs on early identification of struggling faculty and best practices for improvement

Other

• Lead LCME accreditation work for standards involving faculty affairs issues
• Collaborate with offices responsible for evaluation and continuous quality improvement to measure program effectiveness
