Position Summary

The University of Georgia School of Medicine is seeking a dynamic, innovative academic medical educator with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to join the leadership team of the three-year categorical Internal Medicine Residency Program in Athens, Georgia, as an Assistant Program Director. This position offers significant opportunities for professional development, leadership growth, and advancement in medical education.

The Assistant Program Director will assist the Program Director in the administration and operation of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, with a particular focus on Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. The role includes instructional, clinical, scholarly, and administrative responsibilities. In addition, the individual will serve as the Medical Director of the resident continuity clinic, Community Internal Medicine of Athens ( CIMA ), overseeing clinic operations and providing teaching and supervision for Internal Medicine residents.

This is a non-tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties/Responsibilities
Residency Program Leadership
  • Implement and manage the development and execution of a comprehensive Quality Improvement curriculum, including:
    • Didactic instruction
    • Resident quality improvement projects
    • Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) and Quality conferences
  • Assist in supervising the Chief Resident in activities such as:
    • Noon Conference
    • Academic Half-Day scheduling
  • Participate in resident recruitment activities, including application review and candidate interviews.
  • Contribute to program initiatives in:
    • Research
    • Mentoring and advising
    • Resident wellness
    • Rotation development
  • Oversee resident appointments and participation on hospital committees.
  • Collaborate with data analysts to develop resident-specific performance metrics.
  • Distribute performance metrics to residents and supervise improvement plans based on those metrics.
Clinic Medical Director Responsibilities
  • Serve as Medical Director of the resident continuity clinic, with responsibilities including:
    • Oversight of clinic schedules and operational updates
    • Facilitation of clinic meetings
    • Orientation of new faculty
    • Management of provider calls and requests
    • Implementation of St. Mary’s policies and procedures
    • Oversight of quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and clinical workflow
Clinical and Educational Responsibilities
  • Participate in the clinical practice of the ambulatory/outpatient resident continuity clinic.
  • Teach and supervise Internal Medicine residents.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, including:
    • Publishing and disseminating original work in peer-reviewed venues
    • Mentoring residents in scholarly activity, publication, and presentation at conferences
