Position Summary
The Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs is a key leadership rolewithin the UGA School of Medicine ( UGA SOM ). This positionprovides professional support and guidance to SOM faculty acrossthree interrelated domains: faculty affairs and academicadvancement, faculty well-being, and career success.

The University of Georgia School of Medicine was founded in 2024and received preliminary accreditation in 2026.
The establishment of a new public medical school at UGA comes asthe state faces a significant shortage of medical professionals.The population of Georgia, the nation’s eighth-largest state, hassurged to approximately 11 million residents, straining existingmedical infrastructure and resulting in longer wait times forappointments and reduced access to care. Georgia currently ranks39th in the nation for the number of active patient care physiciansper capita and 41st for the number of public medical students percapita.
As a top-20 public university with a thriving research enterpriseand vast public service network, the University of Georgia iswell-positioned to produce more highly trained physicians,alleviate physician shortages, and improve the state’s ability toprovide quality health care for its citizens.
The School of Medicine is located on UGA’s Health Sciences Campusin Athens. In its inaugural year, the UGA School of Medicine willenroll 60 students per class, but a new $100 million medical schoolbuilding will enable the UGA School of Medicine to grow to 120students per class in the future.

Minimum Qualifications
- MD, DO, PhD, or other terminal degree in a health professionsor related field.

Duties/Responsibilities
Faculty Onboarding
- Develop and maintain standardized onboarding protocols,orientation materials, and a new faculty career success seriestailored to the UGA SOM context
- Serve as an important point of contact for new faculty duringtheir initial appointment period, connecting them to institutionalpolicies, resources, and key personnel
- Develop/revise the UGA SOM faculty handbook and other websiteresources
- Collaborate with Department Chairs, Human Resources, andadministrative offices to ensure timely credentialing andcompletion of institutional requirements
- Solicit and act on feedback from new faculty to continuallyimprove the onboarding experience
Academic Advancement and Promotion
- In collaboration with the department chairs, advise faculty atall ranks on promotion pathways, forms, systems, timelines,criteria, and portfolio preparation in accordance with UGA SOM andUGA policies
- Provide individual consultations to faculty at critical careerjunctures including onboarding, pre-promotion, CV review,scholarship development, career challenges, and intent-to-leaveconversations
- Provide workshops or other mechanisms to support faculty inbuilding competitive promotion packets
- Provide timely updates to faculty regarding available promotionand tenure development opportunities at UGA
- Be a conduit to the UGA Faculty Offices to clarify or mediateany promotion/tenure applications
- Provide advocacy for faculty career opportunities both insideand outside the UGA SOM
Faculty Well-Being
- Champion programs and initiatives thatsustain faculty engagement, belonging, and well-being across allcareer stages.
- Foster a culture of faculty recognition by celebratingachievements, milestones, and contributions to the school’smission
- Partner with UGA SOM Office of Personalized Health & WellBeing and UGA Office of Faculty Affairs to promote wellnessactivities and resources to ensure faculty have access towell-being support and community
Faculty Success Career Services
- Coordinate mentorship pairing and peer integration to promoteearly engagement and belonging
- Use data to monitor success of the mentorship and revise asneeded
- Provide faculty vitality programming including careerdevelopment workshops, leadership development, and mid- andlate-career resources
- Coordinate with HR on exit interviews and use data frominterviews to inform improvements to increase facultyretention
- In coordination with Office of UME, Office of GME, AssistantDean of Faculty Development, and Department Chairs, develop andpromote programs that support the engagement and success ofvolunteer adjunct clinical faculty
- Offer Unit level mediation services and conflict resolutionsupport to faculty members
- Advise the SOM Dean, Department Chairs and HR on USG, UGA andUGA SOM on updated faculty policies, particularly when addressingacademic productivity, timelines and behaviors
- With the SOM Department Chairs and HR, analyze collated reportson faculty success milestones including professionalism,advancement, promotion/tenure, productivity and significantachievements; report these periodically to the Dean andfaculty
- Serve as an ad hoc (non-voting) member of the Faculty Honorsand Awards Committee
- Offer faculty success educational programming that includesbest practices and habits for career success
- Provide professionalism education programming for faculty,including content on communication, conflict resolution, andinclusive professional conduct
- Serve as a resource and advisor to Department Chairs on earlyidentification of struggling faculty and best practices forimprovement
Other
- Lead LCME accreditation work for standards involving facultyaffairs issues
- Collaborate with offices responsible for evaluation andcontinuous quality improvement to measure programeffectiveness
