The University of Georgia is establishing a new independent Schoolof Medicine in Athens, building on the success of the AugustaUniversity / University of Georgia Medical Partnership, which hasbeen educating physicians in Athens since 2010.
The establishment of a new public medical school at UGA comes asthe state faces a significant shortage of medical professionals.The population of Georgia, the nation’s eighth largest state, hassurged to approximately 11 million residents, straining existingmedical infrastructure and resulting in longer wait times forappointments and reduced access to care. Georgia currently ranks40th in the nation for the number of active patient care physiciansper capita and 41st for the number of public medical students percapita.
As a top 20 public university with a thriving research enterpriseand vast public service network, the University of Georgia is wellpositioned to produce more highly trained physicians, alleviatephysician shortages, and improve the state’s ability to providequality health care for its citizens.
The School of Medicine is located on UGA’s Health Sciences Campusin Athens, home to UGA’s College of Public Health and the currentAU/ UGA Medical Partnership. In its inaugural year, the UGA Schoolof Medicine plans to enroll 60 students per class, but a new $100million medical school building will enable the UGA School ofMedicine to grow to 120 students per class in the future.
The University of Georgia School of Medicine is seekingaccreditation and has been formally recognized with “candidatestatus” by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education ( LCME ),beginning a multi-year accreditation process.

We seek outstanding, team-oriented faculty members who will shareour excitement in continuing to build this dynamic and innovativeeducational program. Preference will be given to candidates whoalso demonstrate a commitment to educational research or otherscholarly endeavors.
Preference will be given to individuals with prior teachingbackground in U.S. medical education programs (a background incase-based and active learning methods in small and large groupsettings is especially desirable), and to those who will beactively engaged in some form of research or scholarship. UGAFaculty Clinical Science and Basic Science Educators work in pairswithin our unique curriculum to facilitate case-based small groupstudent learning on a weekly basis.
