Job description

Description

For more than 60 years, Tyndale has helped readers discover the life-giving truths of God's Word. Today we're one of the largest independently owned Christian publishers in the world. Though our business has grown, our mission remains the same: to open God's Word to as many as possible in language they can relate to and understand.

Every Tyndale nonfiction book passes through copyediting before it reaches a reader. In this role, you're the person who makes sure the finished book says exactly what the author meant — accurate in its Scripture quotations, clean in its grammar and style, consistent in its details, and ready to hand off to Production on schedule.

The Nonfiction Editorial team is a group of people who genuinely love words — reading them, shaping them, and getting them right. You'll work closely with the team leader and fellow editors in regular team meetings where work in progress is reviewed, new products are introduced, and editorial plans take shape. You'll also help orient and guide the freelance copyeditors who extend the team's capacity, which means you'll grow as an editor by teaching as well as by doing.

What You'll Do
  • Protect the accuracy of every manuscript. Copyedit nonfiction manuscripts for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and consistency of style, verifying Bible quotations and the form of bibliographies and notes, and query editors when content raises questions.
  • Keep the freelance bench strong. Assign copyediting and proofreading work to freelancers, review their collated manuscripts, give clear feedback, and track performance in the Freelance Management System.
  • Catch what's left before it prints. Proofread and check corrections on galley proofs and page proofs, plus back cover copy, marketing copy, newsletters, and other in-house projects.
  • Hand Production a clean file. Prepare manuscript files for copyediting, enter corrections and tag text elements to department guidelines, complete transmittal forms, and deliver files ready for the next stage.
  • Keep titles on schedule. Coordinate your work plan with the Nonfiction Team Leader and the wider team, meet assigned due dates, and communicate early about delays or needed schedule changes.
  • Be a resource others can rely on. Answer nonfiction publishing questions from in-house staff and customers, contribute in department and team meetings, and pitch in on team projects as needs arise.
Skills And Qualifications Needed
  • College degree or equivalent editorial experience
  • Excellent command of the English language — grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation
  • Sound editorial judgment and a growing understanding of the complexities of writing and editing
  • Thorough knowledge of the Bible and a growing understanding of evangelical Christian thought
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer word-processing skills for working in digital manuscript files
  • Attentive to detail while keeping the whole book in view
  • Diligent, self-disciplined, organized, proactive, and productive
  • Excellent relational skills, able to navigate conflict and make decisions with confidence
  • Personal maturity, a desire to serve others, and an appetite for learning new editorial skills
  • Personal alignment with and adherence to the Bible as God's Word, and agreement with our Statement of Faith
