Job summary

The St. Louis Mental Health Board (MHB) seeks a full-time Assistant Controller to support the Controller in accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls.

The role requires preparing financial statements, maintaining the general ledger, and ensuring grant compliance in a nonprofit setting. Responsibilities include monthly close, journal entries, budgets, audits, and process improvements, with collaboration across leadership.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree plus 5-7 years accounting experience with leadership or supervision, nonprofit/government preferred.
• CPA required; knowledge of GAAP and FASB; GASB preferred.
• Experience with grant tracking, federal grant accounting (2 CFR Part 200) preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Excel-based allocation schedules and reports required.
• Experience with Power BI, SQL is a plus.
• Strong data analysis and ability to make data-driven recommendations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work with agency personnel.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, analyze, and interpret financial statements, reports, dashboards, and forecasts.
• Oversee monthly/year-end close, journal entries, reconciliations, and GL maintenance.
• Ensure tracking and reporting of restricted/unrestricted and government grants.
• Oversee daily accounting operations including GL, A/P, A/R, and tax filings.
• Develop and monitor budgets and cash flow; perform variance analyses.
• Ensure compliance with tax laws and financial regulations.
• Lead or coordinate internal and external audits and prepare workpapers.
• Refine accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
• Collaborate with Leadership on financial planning and strategy.
• Support payroll and benefits accounting; identify process improvements.
• Manage accounting staff; set goals, delegate, and ensure deadlines.
• Provide training or mentorship to direct reports.
