Job summary

The American Mathematical Society is seeking an Assistant Controller to oversee fund and endowment accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls in support of our nonprofit mission. This role emphasizes GAAP compliance, audit readiness, and collaboration across departments in a hybrid Providence-based setting.

The position reports to the Controller in the Fiscal department and requires strong Excel, analytical, and communication skills to manage complex fund accounts and annual

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required.
• Five+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably nonprofit, association, higher education, foundation, or mission-driven.
• Strong understanding of fund accounting and nonprofit financial reporting.
• Audit experience preferred but not required.
• Experience with automated accounting systems such as NetSuite, Sage, or Microsoft Dynamics; NetSuite experience helpful.
• Excellent project management skills and ability to prioritize tasks.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the monthly financial close process for timely, accurate reporting.
• Monitor daily cash activity and coordinate with Customer Services to apply payments.
• Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, and budgets in annual plans.
• Maintain integrity of the general ledger and financial records.
• Apply GAAP to complex accounting transactions.
• Assist with annual audit and Form 990 preparation and regulatory filings.
• Support ERP and financial systems implementation, maintenance, and optimization.
• Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and 1099/1042-S forms.
• Manage fund accounting structure, endowments, and related accounts.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to improve financial processes.
