Position Summary :
- KQED is seeking a highly motivated, experienced, and dynamic Assistant Controller to support its growth as a leading public media organization.
- Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will collaborate closely with senior leadership to manage accounting operations, ensure regulatory compliance including tax, and support strategic financial initiatives.
- The ideal candidate should possess strong technical accounting expertise, knowledge of US GAAP (preferably non-profit accounting and tax), excellent leadership skills, and the ability to work cross-functionally.
- This role requires comfort operating in a fast-paced environment and working effectively with a diverse team (AP-AR-Reporting-General Ledger Accounting).
- The position is based in San Francisco, CA (hybrid work model).

This role involves a hybrid work environment, combining in-office and remote work. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Salary Range : $131,900 - $164,000 annually
Essential Functions :
- Partner with the Controller to oversee all aspects of controllership, including ad-hoc support for teams and initiatives.
- Manage accounting operations, general ledger, and tax reporting.
- Supervise daily accounting activities, including accounts payable, receivable, month-end close, reconciliations, and analysis.
- Guide Revenue Accounting regarding revenue recognition for gifts, grants, underwriting, exchange contracts, and multi-deliverable arrangements.
- Review external reports such as government filings, financial reports, and tax documents.
- Manage relationships with external auditors to ensure efficient audit and tax processes.
- Collaborate with departments like FP&A and Legal to support business initiatives and ensure alignment with financial reporting goals.
- Promote automation and process improvements within the accounting team.
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and system automation.
- Conduct technical accounting research and prepare guidance memos.
- Lead system implementations or upgrades as needed.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and document policies and procedures.
- Review financial reporting related to grants and other duties as assigned.
Candidate Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- CPA or similar qualification preferred.
- At least 5 years of relevant accounting experience, including public/private sectors.
- Experience with tax filings, ERP systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, Workday, Adaptive), and advanced Excel skills.
- Collaborative leadership style with strong coaching and mentorship abilities.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively across organizational levels.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with attention to detail.
- Experience establishing policies, processes, and controls using technology to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Knowledge / Experience Desired :
- Experience in the public broadcasting industry preferred.
- Familiarity with Sage Intacct, Adaptive Insights, and WideOrbit software.
