Job summary

Atrium is seeking an Assistant Controller in Orlando to lead financial reporting, close processes, and GAAP compliance. You will supervise accounting staff, support audits, and partner with project managers to optimize profitability and controls.

The role requires strong knowledge of construction accounting, job costing and WIP revenue recognition, with opportunities to implement process improvements and ensure accurate financial data across the organization.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years progressive accounting experience within project-based environments.
  • Solid knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Experience with construction project accounting concepts and schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements per GAAP.
  • Support month-end/year-end close processes, including journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Maintain general ledger accuracy and data integrity.
  • Prepare budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses.
  • Monitor cash flow, working capital and financial performance metrics.
  • Support project accounting functions: job costing, revenue recognition, and WIP reporting.
  • Collaborate with project managers to assess profitability and performance.
  • Ensure internal controls and regulatory compliance across processes.
  • Assist with audits, tax compliance, and reporting requirements.
  • Supervise accounting staff (AP/AR/GL) and mentor team members.
  • Identify process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Serve as backup to Controller and participate in special projects.

Job description

The Assistant Controller will play a key role in managing financial reporting, supporting month-end and year-end close processes, and ensuring compliance with GAAP standards. This position will collaborate closely with project managers, operations leaders, and the Controller to maintain accurate financial data and drive process improvements. The role also involves supervising accounting staff and assisting with audits and special projects. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Support the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analysis.
  • Review and maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses.
  • Monitor cash flow, working capital, and financial performance metrics.
  • Support project accounting functions, including job costing, revenue recognition, and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting.
  • Partner with project managers and operations leaders to monitor project profitability and financial performance.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with external audits, tax compliance, and reporting requirements.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and General Ledger personnel.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Serve as a backup to the Controller and assist with special projects as needed.
Required Experience/Skills
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience in construction, engineering, specialty contracting, or other project-based industries.
  • Knowledge of job costing, construction accounting, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
  • Experience with Viewpoint, Sage, CMiC, or similar construction ERP systems.
  • Experience supporting audits, WIP schedules, and multi-entity accounting environments.
  • Strong process improvement and system implementation experience.
Preferred Experience/Skills
  • CPA designation or progress toward CPA certification.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with financial modeling.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with internal controls and SOX compliance.
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Master's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.
  • CPA certification strongly preferred.
  • Continuing education in construction accounting or project-based financial management is a plus.
