Company Overview
Established specialty contractor with a significant presence throughout Northern California. The company manages a large portfolio of commercial and industrial projects and is seeking an Assistant Controller to help support continued growth, strengthen accounting operations, and improve financial visibility across active projects.
Position Summary
The Assistant Controller will partner closely with the Controller to oversee day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, project accounting, and billing functions. This role requires a strong understanding of construction accounting, including progress billing, job costing, WIP reporting, retention tracking, cash flow management, and revenue recognition.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader who can manage accounting staff while serving as a key business partner to project managers and operations leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Prepare and review financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Manage project accounting activities, including job costing, contract tracking, change orders, and WIP reporting.
- Review and oversee monthly progress billings and collections activities.
- Monitor contract balances, retention receivables, and unbilled revenue.
- Support revenue recognition and percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Analyze project profitability, cost-to-complete estimates, and margin fluctuations.
- Partner with Project Managers to ensure accurate forecasting and timely billing.
- Develop cash flow forecasts and support working capital management initiatives.
- Review account reconciliations and maintain strong internal controls.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, external audits, and lender reporting.
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
- Drive process improvements and ERP optimization initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Construction or subcontractor accounting experience required.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Progress billing
- WIP schedules
- Job costing
- Revenue recognition
- Retention accounting
- Change order management
- Experience supervising accounting personnel.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Experience with Vista, Spectrum, CMiC, Foundation, Sage 300 CRE, or similar construction ERP systems.
- CPA preferred but not required.

- Large-project or multi-project construction environment.
- Companies with annual revenue exceeding $100M.
