Job Description
ASSISTANT CONTROLLER (Permanent) Our client, a local, family-owned construction company in WNY, is looking to hire an Assistant Controller to join their team.This person will work closely with the Corporate Controller to manage the day-to-day accounting functions and strengthen the finance team for the future.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and actively participate in day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, project billings, cash applications, and other transactional processes
- Participate in monthly close processes, ensuring all deadlines, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and reporting deliverables are completed accurately and on schedule
- Prepare and review monthly journal entries, including accruals, intercompany transactions, depreciation, amortization, prepaid expenses, and other recurring accounting activities
- Maintain accurate project accounting records, including contract status, job costs, billings, and project-related financial data
- Collaborate with Project Managers to analyze job performance, monitor costs, and ensure proper revenue and expense recognition
- Prepare monthly customer billings, including AIA billing packages, lien waivers, and supporting contract documentation
- Build a comprehensive understanding of project financial performance, including cost-to-complete estimates, labor productivity, equipment utilization, contract compliance, and profitability metrics
- Monitor project financial trends and proactively identify cost overruns, margin fluctuations, billing discrepancies, and other accounting risks requiring management attention
- Participate in the preparation of annual budgets, financial forecasts, variance analyses, and management reporting packages
- Compile monthly financial statements and provide detailed account analyses and supporting schedules to facilitate management decision-making
- Manage daily cash reporting and forecasting activities to provide leadership with clear visibility into liquidity, working capital, and cash requirements
- Support external audit engagements by preparing schedules, coordinating requested documentation, and ensuring timely responses to auditor inquiries
- Lead and mentor accounting personnel, developing skills and talent to improve team strengths
- Identify and prepare junior team members for expanded responsibilities and future leadership roles
- Deliver meaningful financial insights and recommendations that support informed decision-making across finance, operations, and project management teams
- Assess existing accounting procedures and implement practical improvements that enhance efficiency, accuracy, compliance, and internal controls
- Strengthen process documentation, standard operating procedures, and cross-training initiatives to ensure continuity and minimize key-person dependencies
- Utilize advanced Excel capabilities to automate reporting, improve reconciliations, and enhance financial analysis
- Support the ongoing evolution of accounting processes, reporting capabilities, and system enhancements as the organization continues to grow
- Work well both independently and in a team environment
- Other duties as assigned/as necessary
Details:
- Position is full-time, direct hire
- 100% in-office
- $100,000 - $115,000 annually depending on experience plus bonus (based on company’s performance)
- 5+ years’ Accounting experience in a construction setting
- AIA experience required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related
- Experience with ComputerEase, Textura, ERP systems, and construction accounting software preferred
- Proficient in Excel
- Strong organization skills and time management skills
- Strong attention to detail & accuracy
- Self-motivated, but collaborative and team oriented
