Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required or equivalent.
  • CPA designation preferred or in progress.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems (Yardi preferred).
  • Experience with month-end close, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including presenting financial analyses to non-financial audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily accounting operations and financial reporting.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Translate financial data into actionable insights for strategic decisions.
  • Support month-end and year-end close, reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Ensure GAAP compliance and internal controls.
  • Coordinate external audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting.
  • Collaborate with operations and leasing to enhance KPI reporting.
  • Present monthly, quarterly, and annual analyses to non-financial audiences.
  • Assist budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support the accounting and financial reporting functions of the organization. This role assists in managing the day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and supporting month‑end and year‑end close processes. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical accounting knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment.

Key Responsibilities ofAssistant Controller

  • Assist the Controller in overseeing daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
  • Translate complex financial data into clear, actionable business insights that support strategic decision‑making.
  • Support month‑end and year‑end closing processes, including account reconciliations and journal entries.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company policies.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and monitoring internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Coordinate and assist with external audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with operations and leasing departments to develop and enhance KPI reporting.
  • Lead presentations of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial analysis, explaining drivers of performance, risks, opportunities, and recommendations in an understandable manner for non‑accounting audiences.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management processes.
  • Assist in managing fixed assets, accruals, and other accounting functions.
  • Provide leadership to 10+ member accounting team.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and increased operational efficiency.
  • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications of Assistant Controller
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA designation preferred or in progress.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems (Yardi preferred).
  • Experience with month‑end close, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.

Preferred Qualificationsof Assistant Controller
  • Experience in real estate or property management.
  • Experience in Yardi or similar real estate ERP.
  • Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial modeling.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team development experience.
