Job summary

GrayMar Environmental Services is seeking an Assistant Controller to own the corporate accounting close end to end. You will run the close in the Controller’s absence and manage a broad set of technical and reporting responsibilities in a multi-entity, private-equity-backed organization.

You will lead the transactional accounting teams, own payroll and AP, and partner with the Controller to strengthen controls, automate workpapers, and shorten the close.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Six or more years of progressive accounting experience with full monthly close.
  • Strong US GAAP knowledge including ASC 842, intercompany eliminations, and consolidations.
  • Hands-on ERP experience, NetSuite preferred.
  • Advanced Excel skills and process automation orientation.
  • Excellent communication skills across teams.

Responsibilities

  • Manage corporate accounting close end to end and run it in the Controller’s absence.
  • Lead monthly close calls, maintain close calendar and cadence to shorten close time.
  • Own balance sheet reconciliations and monthly reviews, ensuring accuracy.
  • Automate balance sheet workpapers and strengthen internal controls.
  • Support intercompany eliminations, consolidation and acquisition accounting.
  • Oversee AP, payroll, and Ramp procurement under Controller’s guidance.
  • Contribute to MD&A, bank reporting, covenant compliance, and lender packages.

Position Overview

The Assistant Controller reports to the Controller and owns and runs the corporate accounting closely and must be able to run it end to end, without hiccups, in the Controller’s absence. Beyond the close, the Assistant Controller helps own a broad set of technical and reporting responsibilities across a private-equity-backed, acquisitive, multi-entity organization: intercompany eliminations, purchase accounting, debt and lease accounting, the lender reporting package, covenant compliance, and acquisition financial packages. The role also helps lead the transactional accounting teams owns accounts payable and the Ramp environment end to end, payroll, and billing coordination and partners with the Controller to strengthen controls, automate workpapers, and continuously shorten the close. The consistent theme is “help, own, and assist”: a technically strong, reliable second-in-command who can carry the function.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the corporate accounting close from end to end and be able to run the full close independently, without hiccups, when the Controller is out.
  • Lead the monthly close calls and maintain the master close calendar, checklists, and cadence, continuously working to shorten the close window.
  • Prepare and review recurring close entries and accruals payroll, PTO/vacation, and revenue accruals, ROU/lease entries (ASC 842), and PP&E/depreciation.
  • Own the monthly balance sheet review and account reconciliations, ensuring every account is supported, reconciled, and clean.
  • Build and automate the balance sheet reconciliation workpapers to improve accuracy, consistency, and speed.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls and close documentation in support of a clean external audit.
  • Help own intercompany eliminations and consolidation considerations across GrayMar’s
  • entities.
  • Support purchase accounting and acquisition integration, opening balance sheets, elimination structures, and related entries.
  • Maintain the debt stack and related entries (term loan, DDTL, revolver and hedging as it arises), lease accounting, and help draft and revise accounting policies.
  • Understand and be able to assist with monthly and quarterly MD&A / bank reporting package for the lender.
  • Prepare acquisition and entity financial packages P&L, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, and eliminations.
  • Support quarterly covenant compliance (the Compliance Certificate) and private-equity sponsor reporting.
  • Support 13-week cash flow forecasting and working-capital visibility for leadership.
  • Own the Ramp environment
  • AP bill pay, corporate cards, and Ramp Procurement (purchase orders) under the Controller’s direction.
  • Partner with and help lead the payroll, and billing functions to keep transactional processing timely and accurate.
  • Help lead and review the corporate accounting and transactional teams (accounting, AP, payroll).
  • Drive process improvement and automation across the close and reconciliations, helping shorten the close cycle.
  • Serve as a key backup to and partner with the Controller across the full finance and accounting function.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Six or more (6+) years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of a full monthly close and review or supervision of accounting staff.
  • Strong technical accounting foundation in US GAAP close, accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, lease accounting (ASC 842), revenue, PP&E, and intercompany/consolidations.
  • Demonstrated ability to run a complete monthly close independently and lead close cadence and deadlines.
  • Hands‑on ERP experience (NetSuite strongly preferred).
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong workpaper and automation orientation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across accounting, AP, payroll, and operations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Strong work ethic with a safety-first mindset.
  • Ability to work independently or part of a team while managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • CPA (active) preferred but not required.
  • Experience in a private-equity-backed or acquisitive, multi-entity environment
  • consolidations, intercompany eliminations, purchase accounting, and M&A integration.
  • Experience with lender and covenant reporting (bank package, MD&A, compliance certificates) and debt accounting (term loans, DDTL, revolver).
  • NetSuite experience (implementation or optimization a plus), and Ramp or a comparable AP / procurement platform.
  • Background in environmental, construction, field-services, or other project-based industries.
  • Familiarity with 13-week cash flow forecasting and basic treasury / hedging concepts.
