Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • CPA certification is highly preferred.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience in project-based organizations (construction/engineering).
  • Experience with revenue recognition and percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Strong GAAP, SOX, and internal control knowledge.
  • Advanced Excel skills and large data analysis.
  • Experience with construction ERP systems such as Viewpoint Vista, CMiC, Sage 300, Foundation.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily accounting operations with accurate, timely financial information.
  • Support month-end and year-end close with journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements.
  • Monitor project costs, WIP, and contract activity to assess profitability.
  • Provide financial insights to project leaders to inform business decisions.
  • Maintain internal controls and assist with SOX compliance and audits.
  • Lead and develop accounting staff; participate in system upgrades and reporting enhancements.

A growing, project-driven organization is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to help lead its accounting function and support continued business expansion. This role works closely with executive leadership to oversee financial operations, strengthen reporting processes, and provide accounting guidance across multiple active projects.

I. What You’ll Do
  • Assist in overseeing daily accounting operations while ensuring financial information is accurate, complete, and delivered on schedule.
  • Play a key role in the monthly and annual close by reviewing journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, and supporting financial statements.
  • Evaluate project financial performance by monitoring costs, contract activity, work-in-progress balances, and overall profitability.
  • Partner with project and operational leaders to provide financial insight, identify trends, and support business decisions.
  • Help maintain a strong internal control environment by ensuring accounting practices comply with GAAP and SOX requirements.
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors by preparing schedules, responding to inquiries, and supporting audit requests.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements that increase efficiency, enhance reporting, and strengthen financial controls.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, and development for members of the accounting team.
  • Participate in system upgrades, reporting enhancements, and other strategic finance initiatives.
II. What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • CPA certification (active or inactive) is highly preferred.
  • At least five years of accounting experience supporting construction, engineering, or other project-based organizations.
  • Experience with revenue recognition, percentage-of-completion accounting, project cost tracking, and work-in-progress reporting.
  • Strong understanding of financial statement preparation, general ledger management, and month-end close procedures.
  • Experience working with construction ERP systems such as Viewpoint Vista, CMiC, Sage 300, Foundation, or similar software.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and SOX compliance standards.
  • Advanced Excel skills with experience analyzing large data sets and creating financial reports.
  • Proven ability to prioritize competing deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
III. Required Experience
  • Knowledge of AIA billing and construction contract administration.
  • Experience working in a publicly traded or SOX-regulated environment.
  • Participation in ERP implementations, accounting system upgrades, or finance transformation initiatives.
  • Previous experience managing or mentoring accounting professionals.
  • Background supporting commercial construction, infrastructure, or specialty contracting organizations.
