Job summary

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York seeks a conservator to join the Department of Objects Conservation. You will work on two monumental polychrome ensembles and contribute to examination, research, and treatment in collaboration with a team of four conservators.

This is a fixed-term appointment with an initial 2.5-year duration. A Master’s in conservation and at least two years of experience are required, with strong documentation and communication skills for work in public spaces during

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in conservation from a recognized program.
  • At least two years of conservation experience.
  • Experience in examination of painted surfaces.
  • Understanding of stratigraphic analysis of painted surfaces.
  • Proficiency with conservation documentation tools.
  • Excellent hand skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and with colleagues.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and work on ladders.
  • Ability to perform conservation work in public spaces during museum hours.

Responsibilities

  • Conserve the sculptural ensemble and architectural frame with the team of four conservators.
  • Contribute to examination and research for the ensembles.
  • Interpret treatment goals based on analysis from the Scientific Research Department.
  • Prepare visual and written documentation following AIC guidelines.
  • Possibly disseminate findings via lectures, publications, or online content.
